Engine Age check on day of the IVa test

I just want to check the evidence I have is enough.

So I have the V5 with a date of manufacturer ../../1994

Does the tester check the V5 and set about doing the relevant test? Or does he check on a computer as well?

Reason I ask is the engine / car was an import MR2 so appears to be on no English systems and getting a headed letter from toyota for anything import is like trying to get bloody from a stone!

take a haynes manual as my logbook was not good enough..he said its worthless because the engine could have been changed in its history... he told me a haynes manual would be fine..

lucky i only live 5 mins from my test station..

I also used a Haynes manual back in the day of SVA.

Just checked and there doesn't appear to be a manual for the MR2

You don't need the age of the donor car, only the date of manufacture of the engine. If you ask Toyota for the engine age based on the engine number they might help?

Also give your examiner a ring and ask them. I had a letter from Ford, but he said I only needed the Burtons catalogue!

Toyota GB can't help as the engine is an import.

So I wrote to Toyota Japan who told me they won't relase that information to customers.

Toyota GB won't speak to Toyota JP for me to get the info. Useless all round!

Can you get a headed letter from the MR2 owners club detailing the year of manufacture based off the engine code? Its better than nothing.

OR

The ST202 and ST182 Celica were sold in the UK and used the 3SGE. The ST185 and ST205 Celica used the 3SGTE as well. Does that possibly have a reference that covers your engine code, in the UK service or maintenance or Haynes manuals?

Doesn't the V5 give the engine number ? If so and it tallies with your engine that might be proof enough.

Someone earlier in the thread said that wasn't enough proof for them unfortunately.

Deezee - thanks for the idea I may go for headed letter from the MR2 owners club (or a couple) as that can only help the cause!

I'll also check out the celica bits although being a different vehicle im not sure it will help.

The logbook is no good as they are trying to prove the age of the engine, not the donor car. You could put a 1997 engine into a 1992 car, get the logbook updated and claim you don't need a cat.

Have you tried a Toyota dealer? I got an Alfa dealer to look mine up on their parts system based on the chassis number, and they produced a printout which had the engine number on it along with date of manufacture. Might not work for an import of course...
