Harness Installation, legal and MOT?
Oddified - 2/3/14 at 01:34 PM

Recently fitted a 4 point harness into my car, Schroth Profi 111-FE ASM which is FIA and EEC/E4 approved with red push button operation etc etc. Lap belts are clip in with eye bolts, shoulder straps wrap round roll cage cross bar, all the strap angles, mounting points and positions are correct and it feels great.

Two questions though regarding legality and passing the Mot (which aren't always the same thing as we all know!);-

Clip in fittings/eye bolts are ok, but do they have to be locked on? (ie, the clip locked with a split pin so they can't easily be unclipped).

Is it ok to leave the standard seat belt in place along with the harness? (quicker/easier to jump in/out of the car if i'm just popping into town or MacDonalds etc).

Done a bit of 'googling' and not found any clear yes or no answers.

Harnesses are legal for MOT and are probably subject to the same checks as a standard belt, and yes you can leave the standard belt in aswell.

Checks will usually just be that the mountings are secure with no rust around structual areas etc., the belts are not frayed/damaged and that they can be adjusted to fit different passengers.

Can you use the eye bolt fixings for the IVA? Rather than bolts?

Yep, I used a Scroth harness with eyebolts and clips. Tester was happy.
They changed it a while ago so that FIA-approved harnesses are acceptable for IVA...and many/ most of those come with eyebolt fixings.
