V5 - do I use it?
kingster996 - 11/6/14 at 12:51 PM

My donor vehicle for the my build was an E Reg Sierra.

When I bought the fully stripped donor, along with the kit parts I had originally intended to build, I was given the log book and VIN plates in case I wanted to get an age related plate.

Note, I was given the whole log book, not just the 'new keeper' section.

Now, I had planned to send it off and get the "car" reg'd in my name (and SORN'd) - but noticed that the previous owner had ticked the 'scrapped' box and dated it 04/06/03 - and that the 'sale to a dealer' section was filled in.

Now, as I understand it, normally the old keeper should send off the V5 to the DVLA and then the DVLA send you the new book - and if it fails to arrive, you can request one (about 4 weeks later so they say) - and this was my original plan.

However, if I do this, then perhaps the poor bloke who sold the Sierra back in 03 would then be liable somehow for the back tax as it wasn't SORN'd (I checked).

I am happy to get a Q plate and so not bothered about the age related option - unless someone tells me a real good reason to get one - so I could just forget all about the V5 and use the receipt I have for the parts as proof of purchase should the need arise, or do I just request a new V5 which might drop the other bloke in it?

Finally, is there any liability for me having the parts from a car that hasn't been 'officially' scrapped?

Any thoughts?

You could try and use it explaining that you bought it as scrap and used parts for kit car
Best result age related worse Q
So you are no better off than you expected but could be a bit better off
Go for it

So, why is Q worse that Age Related?

I thought Q was better for MOT's and I am not bothered about having a personal reg number.

I guess what I really want to know is will binning the V5 cause me any grief - or do I somehow have to declare that I bought a stripped donor and hand over the V5?

weren't all v5's re-issued with red ones, replacing previous blue ones? (about 2 years ago)

Suspect it's just the live ones that are SORN eligible . Ones such as this will be dormant

None of mine were...

All 4 of mine were at varying times in the year.

When I built the Exocet the donor was in Ian's From the magazines name not mine I just gave the v5 i his name to the Dvla with the reg forms and nothing was said about it. They just marked the car as scrapped and accepted the age related application.
