New plate vs age related.

What's the general consensus on getting a brand new plate rather than a plate related to the engine and gear box...I.e. 2001 vs 2014

If I have a brand new plate, how do they look at tax in comparison to what it was in 2001?

Won't your tax go off your emissions? So it will relate to your engine age.

The only advantage I can see is if you a new (non Q plate) you have a larger range of personalised numbers and letter to choose from. As my engine and gearbox was from a donor car then I was restricted to an age related plate. If I could not prove the origins or refurb status of the engine/gearbox units or if they had not been from the same car they would have given me a Q plate. That is my understanding.

Thanks guys....so how much should I send with the dvla forms for tax and reg fee.....to tax a puma it's 225 / yr, so should I assume this will be the tax cost. Also what is reg fee?....ahhhhhhhhhhhh!

Ok..I think have the answer...fee is 55, tax of the puma car I took engine from was 225... So I guess it's safe to assume the same.

Yup that is my recollection

Tax for kit cars is based on engine size. Regardless of the engine age or date of registration. If its over 1549cc its the higher price.

What he said ^^^

As there are no CO/km figures for your car, it's based on engine size. Either over or under 1549.

I sent £230 for a years tax (2litre engine)

For proof of origin of parts I sent V5C from Donor, some photos I had of the bits (as part of build photos) and most importantly a covering letter.

The letter was Explaining individual receipts were not available for parts as they were all provided from a single donor vehicle id purchased and hence am applying for an age related plate. That appeared to be enough for me as I got an age related plate.
