Using the following dash for my MK Indy R.
Will I be OK just mounting it directly on the dash or does it need to be recessed for the radius test?
I'm looking to mount it centrally in the dash rather than behind the steering wheel.

You're picture is a bit small, it's hard to see the radius' on it, but funnily enough found the same image on google a bit bigger as below.
Looks like it could be ok, depends always where on the dash it goes. If it's behind the steering wheel then it doesn't matter but if it's in the centre then will have to conform.

Centrally mounted, some of it might fall within the exempted area but I doubt all of it will. Anything outside that and contactable with the sphere tool will be subject to the radius test. Either recesing into the dash or making a radiused shroud (that keeps the shere tool away) will help.

Looks like the bezel and frame project more than 3.2mm, meaning it would need have a 2.5mm radius.
Even if less than 3.2mm, its not blunted.
If you recess it its going to need to be quite deep to keep the 165mm sphere off the bezel. i.e - if the height of the unit is about 100mm, it would need to be recessed about 17-20mm + the actually projection of the bezel. If the unit is closer to 150mm high, it would need a 48-50mm recess.

I was afraid someone was going to say that.

I may just mount it behind the steering wheel as a temporary measure and then move it post IVA.
Not sure how anyone gets away with centrally mounted 'normal' gauges unless they project less than 3.2mm?

I'll double check but pretty sure the bezel on the CBR dash projects more than this..

Again it can project as much as it wants as long as it has a radius...

So the bezel on normal gauges will probably be OK then?
I may be after your gauges after all Andy
Either that or try and build something in and around the CBR dash.

I'll be honest, i'm not 100% sure mine are IVA friendly either.... will have a look, also i guess depends on the tacho once i dig it out

You could make a frame for it, maybe from wood?, then covered with a padded material then recessed in to the dash.
Position the switch on the right within the exempt zone 127mm to side of wheel and that would make the recess less as you may get away with that not being radiused. Just cover all the areas in orange (maybe more around the switch on the right)

Hi I used the bike clocks and made a perspex cover and trimmed the edges then made a new dash later some pics in my archive if it's any help

Had similar clock centrally mounted on to of the dash on my build. For the IVA i just got some cheap foam and cut out a snug fitting frame and covered it in some black cloth so it looked semi decent. No issues at test time.

You can buy rounded IVA bezels to fit gauges.

I bought a set but never fitted them; just opened them to take this photo.

My dash is ply covered with foam, then covered with vinyl so the gauges are sunken, therefore passed IVA as they are
with the angled type of bezels.
