Rear view camera IVA

In attempt to overcome the mirror issue I have decided to fit a camera.

one question should the screen be always on or only when reverse is selected?
could find nothing in section 08 indirect vision
except:- Camera systems will only be required to meet RS4, RS6 and RS12.

I would guess always on/(ignition on), since you look in the mirror as you drive.
certainly would wire it that way for iva

Unless the rules have changed (they might) you can't have CCTV set-up instead of a mirror... I would read the IVA manual...

Contact the IVA centre and ask. Runs in my mind though that Bluemoon is right.

Sorry for the late reply test got canceled twice had to wait 8 weeks to get a slot.

Well according to the inspector only "type approved" camera are acceptable
he would not be drawn on the wording of the IVA manual ;-)

I have just emailed DVSA to ask them to clarify.

'Could you advise on the use of reversing cameras on non type approved vehicles (ie kit cars)? Is it acceptable to use them in place of mirrors?

Got a response - first simply quoted the line in the manual, but I pushed for a more concise answer, and there is no need for camera system to be type approved. So the inspector in question might need to review his stance.

Well Done LoggyBoy for getting the clarification.

So I was totally correct in my initial assumption


Just for reference I did not use a £30 cheepy reversing camera of ebay.

It was a Sony CCD effio-v (I use them for diy nightvision and FPV), I spent some time playing with different lenses
to get the best FOV (Field of View). if the fov is too wide you will see lots of distortion to narrow and you will not meet the requirements and magnification becomes an issue.

The biggest compromise was the screen as I had limited space to mount it (did not fancy building a custom mount just for the test)
so ended up using a 5" with fairly low resolution in my opinion is was "just" good enough for the test would have much preferred a 7" -10" display...

If I was to do it again for real and as a total mirror replacement would go for full HD 1080p camera (minimum 720p) along with a 7" full HD screen must be daylight view able high lux rating or one with a sun shield.

If you took it to a different station they would probably accept it with no issues at all!

Looks like they've added the requirement for approval back in. it now states:

CMS will only be required to meet RS4, RS6, RS12 and RS13

RS13: CMS must be approved to the requirements of UNECE Regulation 46.04
paragraph 6.2.2; documentary evidence will be required.

I saw that a while ago, and when I checked it relates to being able to see the screen in 'all lighting conditions'

Meaning they would accept something documented as having daylight readable attributes rather than certification docs? Did you get anything written to back that up?

both the camera and screen are tested, I wonder if there could be an 'approved' aftermarket kit

What actually was "the mirror issue"?

I passed SVA with a MK2 Golf mirror that I 'pinched' off an abandoned Golf near me. It came with an SVA compliant rubber casing on the shaft, but actually, once that was stripped off, underneath is a very nice cast ali shaft.

Guess things have changed a little since 2006!
