One thing to consider is that if it's anything that would be considered dangerous (i.e. brakes don't work properly!) then your insurance company would probably not be happy and would probably reject a claim if you had one.

Mmm thats an interesting one. They'll insure you to drive it to the SVA, so technically you'd still be insured to drive it back if it failed.

Whether you would want to or not is a different matter.

Obviously I wouldn't have driven if it had been anything serious.

My fails were too noisy, emissions and sharp edges in the main, nothing that made it un-road worthy. In fact to check that it was OK to drive my local motorsport garage did a virtual MOT beforehand for me.

I'm pretty sure that if the SVA guys felt it was that unsafe for road use, i.e. "to and from places where you can have work done" then they would not let you drive it home.

It's their neck on the block at the end of the day if something goes wrong even if it's your arse!

Yes - they can slap an "unfit to drive" ticket on it. These are the same blokes (VOSA) who stand by the road and check cars and lorries after all.
