Driving to SVA

What would happen if you were driving to SVA with tyres below the legal limit and were pulled by the police?

I doubt whether they could issue a ticket or producer as you dont have a number plate.

Do you think you could sweet talk them???

You are supposed to display an identifying mark - I was advised by the Newcastle test centre. I used a piece of cardboard with the chassis number on it.

So I guess they would use that rather than a non existent reg number.

Also how would you expect the car to pass an SVA with illegal tyres?

SVA examiner told me they check the markings on the tyre and that the tyre is the correct load/speed rating etc and that insufficient tread depth would technically be an MOT fail but not an SVA.

I still think if you were on the road they would throw the book at you though.

As I said somewhere else today - these guys are VOSA staff, or closely allied - they usually share accomodation. The VOSA guys are the ones who check your car over at the road-side at checkpoints.

They can issue an 'unsafe to drive' notice and leave your car stuck at the test centre, until you can tow it away on a trailer. Or if they don't, they may call over a VOSA inspector to do it on their behalf.

I agree with Shortie, get some new tyres as you will need them anyway when the car is on the road.

The point as with a lot of things that are done for SVA only to be redone with something after SVA is that you can.

As mentioned it would be a ticketable offence if caught by the police and an MOT failure if tested but not SVA failure.

Another point is that unit you have accurate measureing devices you will probably be scrubbing serious ammounts of tread off until you can get camber caster & toe setup accurately.

However, that said, the point about VOSA being next door is extreemly valid and is probably reason enough to warrent acceptance of scrubbing rather than acceptance of possibility of unsafe to drive notices.
