wiil it be a problem to use an engine number that is still registered to a vehicle that is on the road i have a zetec that i can't read the engine number on and have thought about using the engine number from a mondeo which i swapped the engine in a couple of years ago the engine number was never changed on the log book as the engine number couldn't be read on the replacement engine i have a letter from ford that states the build date for the original engine number but the car has just been sold so unable to change the log book how would i stand if i use this engine number on my engine

Wouldn't have thought that was a good idea. Them buggers are due to find out sooner or later
Pop down to your local scrappy and note a suitable cars number instead, then put that on your engine if poss. Or "accidentally" grind yours off and replace with whatever you like. Only i didn't legally just suggest you do that

I've got a 2 litre zetec block in the garage thats going nowhere,i think the engine number is readable if you want to use that i'll go and copy it down later.

Its also an early phase one so it will be good for emisions.

in short no. Illegal too. I am in the same boat with a skimmed block; I have got letter from Ford stating year of manufacturer that should see me through emissions. DVLA said contact Ford for engine number which I will need to do; I asked them when I wrote the first time and they seemed to have ignored that bit - not sure if they will be able to do that.

Do search for no engine numbers and it seems you can make your own up.

If you can get a number off a wrecked block that will never be used would be the best option, although not legal, who would know?

go to classic car shows and they used to sell log books so that people can change there car without changing car.


I knew a chap who had a ford pop 100 e which was registered as a classic pop with 2 seats in red with a xflow, in reality the car he owned was a blue 100e with 4 seats and a pinto.

do they check the number on the engine? I dont recall mine being checked on anything other than the plate on the chassis? I also watch what he does with a keen eye and stand beside him most of the time chatting.
