Can anyone tell me when the date cut off point is from visual only emissions test at SVA (early blocks) to testing Co2 etc? I (think) i have a 1978
engine and a 'visual only' would be great!

From Totalkitcar.com, they seem to know their stuff, got the issue with not having a MOT for the first three years sorted with their help...
The MOT tester will take the age of the vehicle from the registration plate and also assume that this is the date on which it was first used.
If your car has an AGE-RELATED plate he’ll assume that the engine is the same age as the plate and do the test accordingly. However, if your
age-related plate refers to pre-Aug 1998 (‘S’ Prefix) you will continue to get the visible smoke test for the life of the vehicle REGARDLESS of the
age of the engine. Remember though that this does NOT include PERSONALISED plates as in this case the vehicle will continue to be tested according to
its age and NOT the vehicle registration number.
ooh thats interesting. I was going to use a personal plate when i get the car registered. I'm not sure now!! What if i took the letter from ford stating the engines age. Would you think they would go with that?

One of us is confused, and I don't think it's me... 
There is no 'visual only' test at the SVA - it's only for MOT. I have a 1970's x-flow in my car, and it still had to pass basic
emissions tests during my SVA. Nowhere near as strict as for more modern engines, mind.
...or is it me that's confused after all?

When which kit (or whatever mag) built the red Ultima the engine was rebuilt from a 1968 block and i remember them saying it only needed a visual for
SVA.

This is going to be interesting at my SVA. Im sure my Ford letter says my Pinto engine was first installed in a car in July 1986. Right on the border.
Interestingly the engine would have had to be built before then.
Iam very interested in the private plate comment. I will get H plate but year of registration will be recorded on log book as 2005. If i put private
plate on (C14 ....) they may take the age as 2005!. Nightmare. I of course have the Ford letter and somehow think the tester may not register that the
car has private plate and hence apply the 1985 / 86 standard. Interesting time are afoot.

Your engine should be 'tested' or 'regarded' as before July 86 as they take the engine build date.......usually.
This is like the no road tax thing for cars registered before 1973. If you can prove that the car was built before 1st jan 73 then you get free road
tax even if the reg is 74, 75 or whatever.
I will be putting a private plate on my car and have been told that at MOT if you can prove the engines age then the engine will be tested for that
years emissions. so keep the letter from Ford!!

I had an earlier version of this publication - I thought it was a good summary of the requirements, although it still isn't the definitive
statement.
Probably worth having if the SVA Guide is too frightening...
