V8 emissions
Agriv8 - 5/12/05 at 12:54 PM

Here is one I have been pondering about for a while but as I am getting to the piont where I need to get the emmisions under control. I though I would pose the question.

I have an exhaust system for each bank of the V8 i.e. 1 each side of the vehicle. I am on a pre 95 engine with proof of age.

I assume that the levels I am allowed are the Total of each side. This total has to be less than the amount allowed for a pre 95 engine?

Anybody got any thoughts on this ?

Thanks

i would imagine that one bank will be tested an adjustable fuel reg will help if its still running the factory regulator, the rover likes about 3.5% at idle ,by the way what rad are you using? ive found if you can keep the water around 80 degrees they run really well and recover well from a good boning but if it runs closer to 90 they do start to smell hot if you know what imean

Had my SVA test lasy Monday (which I failed - see thread elsewhere).

I did pass emissions (Rover V8 btw), only tested one side and only at tickover.

Engine was built in Dec 1979.

Thanks simon / Froggy.

Froggy using a pace 4 core ali rad that should be up to the job. fitting an oil cooler later this year ( certainly before summer ! ) hope i

Adj fuel regulator fitted.

Regarding the fueling using 14cux brain - green tune resitor and therfor no Lambda Sensors.

It smells a little rich but needs a run or two and then hook her up to the Analiser.

Many thanks for both your help Simon good look for the retest

i used to have a hillman avenger with a vittesse engine in and that used a 4core rad but it had to fit between the chassis rails so it wont be much bigger than what your using it couldnt cope to start with but in the end it had a 75 degree stat and the 16" fan which was shrouded to get the best from it came on at 75c and it would sit in traffic without bother. if you havent got it allready get the new v8 bible by des hammil its a speedpro title got some good info and stuff from j.e. engineering and wildcat.

Thanks got a 1400 cfm fan behind rad so will hope its good enough but like the idea of fitting the 75 deg stat.

Despite Simon having direct and recent SVA experience to the contrary, the draft version of the SVA Manual suggests that Mr SVA should have sampled from both systems?

"7. Total gas emitted
The limits prescribed relate to the total exhaust gas being emitted by the vehicle. If a vehicle has a dual exhaust system, then the emissions from the tailpipes should be averaged. This is done by adding together the readings and dividing by two, e.g.
1st pipe emits 6% CO, 400ppm HC
2nd pipe emits 4% CO, 500ppm HC
Average CO reading is 6 + 4 = 5%
2
Average HC reading is 400 + 500 = 450 ppm"

Thanks Guiness,

thats kinda what i thought so will aim for that moved under its own steam for first time yard forward and then back again thien sprung a huge water leak of one of the hoses so after taking of a little skin on the old knuckles sorted that ant did a presure test all seems ok ready for run up and down the drive tomorow.

what the engine really needs is a good thrashing as moisture build in rocker covers.

Thanks for the info

Mike,

You're absolutely right. He should've checked both side.

Bear in mind my noise test went something like:

"You're allowed 101db and that makes my ears hurt. This doesn't, so I ain't doing it!"

Fine by me I said
