Halfords number plates
DarrenW - 17/12/05 at 08:12 PM

Just got some plates for the kit from Halfords (not my first choice of supplier but wife had to go down cos im house bound till this blasted chickenpox stops being infectious). Apart from paying 3 times what i got a pair from a BMW main dealer for, they dont have the makers name and post code on them. Ive checked DVLA website which confirms they should have.

1. Anyone else bought plates from Halfords in same condition?
2. Legal or not?

I had to a get one for the MOT (One on was just bit too small unless the tester had a magnifying glass) use Halfords again £12.50 a tad much If you look you can just see Halford’s & post code etched on the bottom something I noticed not that clear but there

It is a legal requirement to have suppliers name on. Used to pay £3.50 + vat until recently .

I used to make plates in halfords. Back in the days before all this legal arse came in. In general the plates are over priced and of shite quality ( i can testify to that )
Do what i told so many audio and parts customers to do. Buy a copy of max power or whatever youl get ads in there for printed plates. Much better than ours.
Stereos are much cheaper in there too.

i do work at halfords and can tell you that the halfords logo and HO postcode is there, but is in non reflective material on the nikkalite backing. it doesn't stand out, and is the reason many people will pay the £12.99, not to have to advertise for someone else.

the plates are of a quality proportional entirely to the operator's level of competency. what are you trying to tell us ems? agreed though, printed plates are better.

as for price, remember, halfords price match, so you are welcome to the prices you pay at the dealers, you just have to tell us first. afaik, there is a cheaper in 7 days refund clause too, but couldn't be sure.
cheapest i've found locally was £15 a pair from an audi dealer.

Check out your local motor factors and radiator specialist's they normally supply the trade so often cheaper.

Thanks all for that. Agreed - post ode is there now ive looked more closely.

Im still mortally offended by the price. Plates from BMW dealer were only 11.74 pair. Even if the Halfords plates were double (to cover EU flag and 3D letters) id think it was a bit over, but 3 times more expensive!!!!!!!!

I cant go out due to Chickenpox hence asking wife to get them for me. I would have gone to one of the trade factors round the corner but she wasnt keen.

Oh well - lessons learnt and all that.

You pay7 extra for the 3D letters and EU flag - would the BMW dealer offer these? And would you want a BMW logo on the car? Worth paying extra to not have that, just as you have to pay to not have badges on the back of BM.

DarrenW - 19/12/05 at 05:35 PM

In the end ive paid a £20 premium to have 3D and EU flag!!!! Igf the letters are £7 then the basic plates are already over 2x more expensive than the competition.
I would have been happy to have a BM logo - iam a self confessed BMW nut anly narked by the fact that i couldnt afford a S14 EVO3 engine for the ZR.
Bottom line is that i paid over the odds cos im too ill to go out and get them myself. Had i been aware of the price there is no way i would have bought them.

Iam angry with Halfords (therepaist said it would help to type that!)

But the price is very clearly displayed when ordering number plates. If you can spot that they do 3D letters and the EU flag, you should have read the price, or got your shopper to do so. I don't think it fair to be angry with them, they sold them at the advertised price, and you paid it, they didn't make you buy them from them.

I got my Euro symbol & 3d letters plate made up at Halfords for £17.95
