Rear Reflectors
RichieC - 3/2/06 at 08:46 PM

Hi all,

Had a look through the SVA manual and I cant see anything relating specifically to this but someone may be able to shed some light on it (no pun intended)

Is there a minimum "reflectivity" for rear mounted reflectors? Halfords have some self adhesive reflectors in for about 2 quid a pack and would be easily removed, but theyre really just reflective tape and Im not sure if mr SVA would approve.

Alternatively, is there a known source for fit and forget reflectors as I dont want to be ar5ing about with radiussing them etc etc.

Thanks in advance

Richie

Reflectors must be E marked and either radiused at 2.5mm or less than 4[I think] mm thick.

My SVA inspector failed mine because they were 5mm thick and unradiused. He seemed a little emabarased that he had to fail them, saying that above "this" line you could have razor blades fitted and it would pass.

He didn't check reflectivity at all.

Ah yeh of course, I overlooked the E marking.

Above what line was he talking about?

I just had a rummage through the SVA manual and all I can find about rear reflectors is that there can be any number as long as they are red and not triangular.

Have I missed something?

Just had a look myself and I cant see anything about e marks either.

Do you have a page number or anything Smart51?

Thanks and Rgds

Ooo. Now you've got me. I just assumed that they had to be E marked. Mine are. Is it not on the page with the rear lights? They do have to comply with exterior projection radiusing rules though.

No, theres nothing on that page, just their placement and that they cant be triangular.

If they stick out >5mm, yep theyll be subject to the external projection radius check.

There's not even a regulation about their size either, so they could be tiny as long as they are 'clearly visible'
