Well I knew it was going to happen after reading previous posts!
It's official the DVLA are clueless.
I'm filling in my SVA application and I need a chassis number. SVA centre at Norwich say make one up. Which makes sense as I am, after, all the manufacturer of the vehicle. So I double checked this with VOSA.
VOSA say contact DVLA, and DVLA say contact VOSA!!!
I explained this to DVLA and they came back to me saying I need to send my vehicle paperwork to them with a registration application.
I told them I have no paperwork because it's a new scratch built vehicle. This confused them!
I even went as far as to say I made a car in my garage by sticking little pieces of metal together!
They say I need an MOT, I said I don't because it's a new vehicle. They said It's not a new vehicle because I used old parts. I said I can't get an MOT anyway because I don't have a chassis number.
They said err um!
I said, I give up!
So I thought I'd come here where the real knowledge is!
HELP! I'd like to get on the road sometime this year!

i made my chassis number up and had no problems with sva or registration just make sure you have the right number of digits

From what I gather (not a lot):
1. Fill in all of the reg forms V55/5 I think,
Send these off to local office, they fone up arrange inspection and bring along a built up inspection form V something or other....fill it in with numbers etc etc (oh you can indeed make up your own chassis number 17 alphanumeric numbers long mind)
2. Give them receipts and logbook photocopies etc with the built up form,
3. They tell you to SVA (you've got one now right???) If not do SVA and get MAC form.....
4. Photocopy MAC form as you don't get to see it again! Hand in to local office with payment for tax etc they should fill in the rest of the form V55/5 and issue reg number....that should be it No MOT required though if they hassle too much might aswell do one anyway (thats my plan anyhow!).....Good luck and hope have been usefull....Total KitCar website (I think) have good page on it look at my previous thread called registration I think lots of info on there from others......HTH Oli.

from what i understand, and have read here, you make up a chassis number yourself apply for the SVA and then once you pass then you contact the DVLA.

I have done just that and used my post code and house number for the main part and thus i think it will be unique.

i hope this is correct, but i stand to be corrected

Each DVLA local office has some (official or unoffical) leeway to have their own processes on chassis numbers. In any case, for SVA you have to have a chassis number, so you need to sort out the process at your local DVLA office - if you make one up and stamp it on the chassis, and then have your DVLA say they have to allocate you one, you're a bit stuffed!

For me, it was:

1. Fill in the V55/5 and build up form as far as possible and request my own made up chassis number - send off to DVLA

2. Apply for SVA

3. Get SVA test and MAC form

4. Take MAC form to DVLA for inspection, and issue of reg no. and tax disc, plus a form so I could get number plates made up.

I know many DVLAs do the inspection before SVA, and it varies whther you are able to use your own made up chassis number.

I'm all for as little poncing about as possible. The local SVA centre said make one up. So I've done just that. It's a 17 digit number consisting of my surname, date of birth, the year the car was made and my initials , in that order. The trouble is , if DVLA reject the number when I come to register, I'll have to do my SVA all over again.

Just make one up and send a letter to your local DVLA telling them what the number is and make out as though you've stamped it onto your chassis.

You will be fine with your made up Number.
I'll e mail you a copy of a letter I have on the subject.

Get them to phone you and you should be able to check the chassis number over the phone...i did!

Ok I'll tell them my made up number and if I get any grief I'll tell them I am the kit manufacturer!

Jon, that's what I had to do. I'm officially a chassis manufacturer (having built 2), and they were quite happy with chassis numbers.

otto and bourne both made there chassis numbers up but didnt use the right amount of letters so they added a few but had to go back to the sva station so that the sva guys could change the duplicates,they didnt have to do a retest
