Self-centering - how much?
chriscook - 18/4/06 at 09:43 AM

How much self-centering consitutes "a degree of self-centering"?

I do get self-centering but only at higher turn angles and very little at small angles. I've got about 3/4degree toe out but don't want to go any more as the front edge of the rims are close to appearing from below the bodywork in plan view. (In fact I think they might be too far already)
If the test is normally only at decent amounts of lock I think i'll be ok but am worried if they are concerned with small angles of lock.....
(SVA at nottingham - tomorrow!)

Thanks,
Chris

IIRR he put it on full lock and then let go at a reasonable speed and it has to appear to self center.

You will never know for sure but to me it sounds like yours will be ok.

BTW : He then proceeded to blat up and down the SVA centre a couple of times

HTH,
Rich.

Similar test to mine. Tester had a long run stretch - he just applied some turn left and right and reasonable speed (15 - 20mph iirc) and checked that the car attempted to self steer. He also drove past some cones and checked he could see them with mirrors. All done very quickly really - no drama or fuss.

Mine had good self centre so no problem for me. I had a lot of toe out - car looked daft! (and drove like a pig!). Castor max forward. Tyres 40psi.

I didn't see him do the test but he didn't say anything about it and the car passed so it was ok i guess. (Nottingham SVA centre)

Put it this way, I can turn my steering wheel and wait and wait and wait for self centreing.

Examiner said it did, but I'm going to modify my top wishbones to spherical inner pivots so I can get some castor (and get longer lower to widen the track)

That has to be the most understated 'I've passed' post yet - well done!

I started an "I passed" thread too!

Yes, I saw it just after I posted! Doh

Still well done again
