Engine age.

Hi all, there is a lot of talk regarding contacting Ford to age your engine. Is this still needed if you have the original cars V5, stating the engine number etc. I have used the engine number, after the chassis number, on my vin, as per the original. atb Chippy

Probably depends on your tester but strictly speaking - yes. The powers that be are slowly becoming aware of 2.3L Duratec Powered Mk II Escorts are not powered by 1970's engines...

Note - I have not been through an SVA test so could be talking b@ll@cks

Hijack!

Urm, i was looking for my v5 last night and couldnt find it, assuming it doesnt magically appear from the ether before SVA date, what will the consequences be?

Can I point the tester at the block and he'll go wow, thats an old crossflow, which wasnt manufactured after X date, or will he not care and make me pass all sorts of emmisions wierdness?

If so, what are my options?

Write a nice polite letter to Ford (someone here must have the address, or I could find it tonight) and they'll send you a letter in return. I got mine about a week after writing.

All you need to tell them is the engine number, which is stamped on a lug at the top of the block.

My tester did look at the letter, although he did recognise that it was an old X-flow. Theoretically though, you could still make a new X-flow, as Burton Power will sell you almost all of the parts - if you've got £10,000 or so...

do they make the block? I know they sell aluminium x-flow cylinder heads.; the rest you can buy new.

If the engine on the V5 is of the same era as the vehicle on the V5, that will suffice for SVA engine age. As has been stated, a V5 for an Escort with a Zetec etc in will not.
If yours is a Sierra donor with pretty much any Ford Pinto / V6, the V5 will do.

Just take a copy of the Burtons catalogue and show him the engine age table in there. He'll mutter something about the engine number being difficault to see and everything will be fine.

Yep - just had a look - yours for £3055 inc. VAT. It is cast in aluminium, mind...

Then you'll need their replacement aluminium cylinder head: £550 inc. VAT, then all the add-on bits such as crank, rods, pistons, pumps, and so on.

Would be a very interesting engine when finished, though.

Why build an old crossflow when Ford sell short zetec motors brand new for under a grand?? Cant understand it. Easy route to a new current reg surely??

For me, the crossflow is a traditionalist thing, as is the size of a book chassis. They're simple to build and maintain, parts are all still available, and they produce enough power for me.
If I were building a track car, it wouldn't be a Locost, but a Fury / Phoenix etc with a Zetec on throttle bodies.
There's something about the sound of a crossflow too.
