Sent off my Form and cheque last Thursday. Today I recieved a declaration letter with further questions.
Two of them were easy as they wanted to know if I was the builder and what parts I had fitted (tick boxes) engine, transmission axles etc.
They also asked for the Gross weight. I had supplied the axle weights, but was told that the sva man would fill in the Gross. Wrong!
I put the axle weight + axle weight. 450KG +450KG = 900KG (as advised here).
The form also asked if my submitted chassis number (my own concoction) was ok with my local dvla office.
I wrote a letter, but then decided to ring them instead.
The phone number led me through a multi-menu system to swansea. They said that my local Wimbledon office would contact me within 2 hours. An hour
later, David Kelly (top bloke) rang me and bent over backwards to find out if my vin was ok. He said it would not be guaranteed, but if it was not
taken by the time I take the car to them after sva, it would be mine.
I rang Vosa because Mr Kelly could not put anything in writing and they said all I had to declare was that my local dvla had said it was ok!
So now you know how to get your own vin.
Fill out your chassis number on your form, wait for the declaration and then say your local office said it was ok!
I checked my number on one of those vin checking websites first to see if it existed.
Mr Kelly said that if my number was taken by the time I showed them the car, then all they would do is make me change 1 digit.
Posted off my reply today. Now to wait for a date. Can't be long now!
Just keep those fingers crossed Martin - anything particularly special about the chassis no.?
VIN should be 17 characters long, letters and numbers.

Is it 17 characters long???
My chassis no. isn't 17 characters (although manufacturers no.'s are), I was told it just had to be unique & unlikely to be duplicated - mine is 14 characters & was SVA'd & registered last year
