SVA fail at Taunton
wheezy - 15/5/06 at 05:46 PM

I managed to get there in time so at least the car went through the test.
The examiner was very helpful and tried everything to get me through.
The fail points were as follows:

Rear reflectors 15mm to low.

It was to noisy!!!

After repeatedly failing the emission test (engine was running just about as lean as it would go on the power commander) the examiner sugested removing the tail pipe which has a noise reducer built in.
Next run through it passed with flying colours.
We were now in a catch 22 position. As it had passed without the tail pipe the noise test had to be done without it.
108 db
With it refitted 93 db

At the retest if he can see that the tailpipe has a noise reducer fitted he will have to do another emissions test.

And to top it all the tail pipe fell off on the way home on the dual carriageway.
(sorry Chris)

So not to bad and it should be ready for the trip to Le Mans

What can we say?
A bugger of a fail realy!
I guess that you will have to try to fit the Db killer in the "in" end of the box.
Best of luck with the re-test.

Or a bunch of brillo pads, wire wool etc

The clue is in the operative word..... "SEE" the noise killer.

So put it in line where he cant SEE it.

Not a bad fail at all and mostly easy to fix. Just be careful what you say, or more to the point what you dont say

At least you know what to do, and are nearly there.

Glad to here that mate.

Apart from his decision about the noise I have to say that he was very fair in his decisions. There were a couple of marginal points like self centering and the effectivness of the handbrake which he commented on but passed so I cant really complain.

Hope it all goes well for your test.

Dont forget to leave early

ok mate cheers how did you get your car to try to self centre...

was gonna go for a thrash today but weather looking a bit dodgy

wheezy - 16/5/06 at 10:40 AM

I pushed the tyre Px up to about 35psi and put on about 2 deg of toe out. Make sure you lube the steering column bush in the bulkhead and the link uj.

He said it only just made the effort to self centre in one direction and smiled and shrugged his shoulders.

Let me know if the cat turns up.
