You only need one main one but after that multiples in hidden places may offer some piece of mind should the unmentionable happen.
Ive got a second one on the scuttle cos its in an easy to read location. Ive also wrote it all over the place on components etc as a crude datatag
type idea.
My local DVLA man said that I needed 2 - 1 main one, and another one accessible but distant from the first. I can't say whether this is just his
interpretation or a real rule!
One is stamped on a plate attached next to my battery, and the other is on the frame behind my rad.

I was told two. One stamped plate that can be rivited in the under bonnet area. And one ground or stamped into a chassis member in an easily accesible area in the passenger area.
DVLA only need 1, i had to weld it onto chassis. I think the second is for SVA - ie so he doesnt have to make too much effort to see the numbers on
the main one if inaccessible!
Id get loads of small ones made and put one on each major component. I know the Police love it when a car has loads of distinguishable marks.
A little bit off the subject I know, but I was wondering if our VIN numbers (if we make our own up) need to include the engine number?
Oh boy, dealing with SVA / DVLA is worse than a fair ground lottery. You pays yer money and you takes yer chance!!!
Stockton said weld it, but thinking further she did say this was because they get loads of stolen cars in to be identified and permanent marks make it
so much easier. Yes i know you can cut a tube out but its a touch more work then levering a rivetted tag off. Putting a few more on also make a
tealeaf more wary as they never know if theyve removed tham all.
James - if you can get mutliple plates made they are dead easy to weld on so personally id put a few on. Maybe rivet one to scuttle as well so its in
easy position.

When I got my chassis number from DVLA the letter said it should be stamped in an accessible position of the chassis , on the offside of the
vehicle.
Only once required.

No. Just a unique series of number and letters - 17 digits long. Engines can be changed.

It will convert it into a 1 (One). My chassis no is Luegoviento.
When I did the MoT, it kept taking the i and a 1, lady at the DVLA said, "i" is not allowed, and will be taken as a 1 (one).
Mine passed DVLA inspection last thursday with VIN stamped on both sides of the chassis in the engine bay.
