dashboard radius again sorry

ok, this has been asked more times than front indicator spacing but.....

my dash is 12 mm ply with foam and vinyl front. to pass SVA it needs to be 19 mm radius - the wood can be felt trhough the padding.

Can I radius the lower edge or does it need to be the same curvature right round to the back?

(current thoughts on fixing this is to use a dremel to shape the front and temporarily fix a former back to with the exanding foam stuff).

My hand brake gaiter is a bit short so the updise U shape meatl bit before the handle is expose so that edge is under.

now manual says the measurement is done when lever is released - I don't think the sphere can contact it - would that be ok or would the SVA man have a problem with it?

Re sphere - when I get round to it (sometime, maybe, definitely) I'm going to try a kid's mini- football, cut it in half, fill it full of bonding with a stick poking out as a handle- job done. Let me know if it works though.Cheers, Pewe

WOA hang on. If its rigid then it needs to be 19mm, but if its padded then it only needs to be 5mm i think

Yup just checked it and the dashboard or instrument panel needs to be radiussed to 5mm if covered with a non rigid material.

Now, deep breath, what defines a non rigid material. Well here goes. The way it was explained to me is that the non rigid material needs to be about as solid as a pencil eraser. What I would do is radius the dash front and back sides to 5mm and cover that with foam & vinyl

Use a tennis ball for the sphere.

It is smaller than the sphere but by using the tennis ball if IT can touch anything then youve built in a margin for error.

the SVA manula talks of Shore number; as I understood/read somehwere, the suface is padded so when pressing your thumk into it, you cannot feel the solid backing.

the foam is the expanded yellow armchair stuff, not sure how thick plus vinyl - didn't think that would pass but ......

and does this covering need to go over the edge completely - I know the front is - need to check

If you can, Id use a camping sleeping mat as its relatively stiff. The armchair stuff probably wont be stiff enough to allow you to radius it to 5mm and get a pass. If you want to use the armchair foam I'd radius it to 19mm and cover it, or personally Id prefer to get some very thin stiffer foam, and cover that so that I could radius to 5mm instead.

If i understand you extents of covering query I'd cover it to the edges and beyond just to make sure and so that I had material left over to fix out of sight behind the dash.
