MOT
carman - 3/7/06 at 12:06 PM

Hello All,

Turned up at the MOT station last week, with my car which was SVA's and passed in 12 12 2001. This year was the first MOT on the new computerised system.

Anyway came back 1 hour later and the guy said it has failed. "Oh why I asked". Well I don't know what emission levels to test it under. If I take the year it was registered then it will fall under a Cat test. "Well I said look, it’s a G reg". He reply’s that unless the emissions are printed on the V5 he can't pass it.

Anyone know what to do?

David

Ok, a lesson here for people not yet gone through SVA:

TAKE YOUR V55/5 TO SVA AND GET THEM TO TELL YOU THE EMISIONS WHEN TESTED SO THEY CAN GO ON THE FORM.

Well that's what i'm going to do

Great but any suggestions on how I get my car an MOT which I have been driving for the last 5 years

What is the year first registered on your reg doc?

If it is a G reg then it should say 1989 or thereabouts which you can show to the MOT tester.

My Special was issued by the DVLA, prior to SVA, with a new chassis number but we were able to use the registration of the donor Cortina which had an R plate making it 1977. It has been tested by two different garages from 1998 and they have taken the emission test relating to the donor vehicle which in my case was "No smoke". You may get a positive result if you find another more sympathetic test station.

No. It was registered in 2001 . Donor car was a G reg 1987 April. I have a letter from FORD to confirm engine date.

Just one other point on our car. The engine is a Cosworth YB so much later than 1977. There still appears to be no problem. I think you must have struck very unlucky with you tester.

Yep, unlucky with tester. My chap just says "It's a kit car, does few miles so ain't going to do much to the environment and therefore I won't bother testing it". Which is nice.

Carman: Take the V5 and letter from ford to the MOT station and show the chap. If he still won't play the game go elsewhere.

Ask the MOT station for a VT17 form. Tell them why you believe you were incorrectly failed. They may review the fail on the spot to avoid it.

There are some comments about the VT17 'process' here:

Sounds a bit harsh. Just mot'd my indy bird, and it was tested to 1980 standards as per the age related plate. Even then, he said if it had failed that part, he'd passed it anyway. I always find getting a petrol head for a tested makes higns sooooo much easier. They'd rather see you drive out in it, rather than fail for what is on these type of cars a minor point.

I agree if you are correct then appeal - He should test it same as vosa tesed it for the SVA against the age of the engine.

Hello All,

I've finally got my MOT.

I sent a letter to ford ( got the address from this forum) the letter came back within 1 working day.

Sent letter off to DVLA and asked for the emissions to be printed as to the year of the engine date.

I waited three weeks and back came the V5 the same as I posted it. Phoned them up and they said no problem I’ll print in the notes the date of manufacture. Two days later back it came.

Went to my local MOT station and they said OK no problem. They took it and passed it that day

Hi ya , i am an m.o.t tester , if i have a car that fails the emmissions the emmission tester goes in to a secont test , that asks for the engine number and relivent other details , once engine number is in then it sets all the tollerances to that engine , all emissions testers work the same basis , ask for an appeal form then he will not sleep too well for a few nights ,

Take care
