When do inform DVLA my donor is scrapped?

When is it safe to inform DVLA that you have disposed of the remnants of the donor vehicle? I filled in a SORN application but because I wish to retain my V5 document I have not informed DVLA that the vehicle has been scrapped yet. Is this the right thing to do? Should I get this sorted before I embark on the registration process?

Hi Roger,

I don't know much (but as no-one has replied!), but i think from a legal point of view you have to tell em straight away.

I would get a photocopy of it, for things like engine age proof, etc.

Depends how confident you are of getting an age related plate too, i suppose (search elsewhere on Locostbuilders for conversations on this issue)

Probly doesny help much, but might start the ball rolling on replies!

All the best,

Mark

I would have thought that you wouldn't tell them it was scrapped , because you haven't scrapped all of it???
surley you need the V5 to take to the VRO to prove where the bits came from? (assuming you want an age related plate)

I just made sure all the numbers were either taken off or rendered unreadable (angle grinder is your friend!) before I scrapped the body. As far as the DVLA are concerned it's still sitting on my drive. You do need to put the SORN declaration in though otherwise technically you're liable for road tax for the entire length of your build.

If your build is a mk 1 or 2 escort, then u prob now reached 25 years old so u dont need to pay for ur road tax ..
