500mm headlight height is centre of lens?
James - 22/7/06 at 02:18 PM

Just wanted to double check whether the 500mm in my manual is referring to the centre or the lowest point of the glass lens?

Thanks!

James

If I recall correctly, it is the lowest part of the lens that projects light. If this is the case and if you lamp is round and if 15mm of the edge of the lens does not transmit light (only the centre bit lights up) then the lower edge of the lense must be 485mm or higher. best to leave a margin for error too.

I wasn't sure and asked the question just before my SVA here

I just about got the place I marked to 500mm and I passed but that doesn't really help as it may have been measured to somewhere lower on the lens.

James, the SVA maual states, (abreviated), Lateral position measured from extreme outer edge of vehicle to the edge of the illuminated area. Vertical is measured from the ground to the lower edge of the illuminated area. Hope that helps. Regards Ray.

For dip beam it is measured to the line on the lens which is the cut off point for the beam - a straight line across the lamp on the typical 7" round units, for all other lamps measurements are taken to the edge of the part emitting light. You need to be careful when placing lamps measured from the edge of the vehicle as they measure from the widest point of the vehicle, NOT the widest point adjacent to the lamp - hope that's clear.

Okay thanks everyone.

Done the mounts, 500mm is below the lowermost edge of the lamp so should be fine.

Cheers!

If you want a simple guide on lighting, there is a graphical example HERE on my website.
