just noticed the built in level sensor in my master cyl in not in the cap so imposible to check its opperation apart from pushing a button on the dash which proves the bulb works.
how will mr jobsworth from the minstry of silly walks veiw this, its a genuine ford part

As long as the button works it shouldn't be a problem.

short of draining some fluid off there is no way to check the level switch is working

If you un-screw the cap and lift it, it has the same effect as draining or taking fluid out - it lifts the sensor/float out of the fluid.

Also if you have an extra earth running off of the sensor (as per Sierra/Granada) then that when connected to the handbrake switch will do the job of push the button to test light by pulling the hand brake on and off.

jgg,the lid is just a lid,the float is the other side of the container, the SVA says the tester must be able to see that the float floats and the switch works

He will have to poke the float down with a nice clean bit of wire to activate the float switch and see the dash light come on, then confirm the button tests the same light.

Sorry I need to go to opticians again.

Yes but to do that he'll have to take the lid off, see above.
