Buying car - insurance
Lawnmower - 22/9/06 at 03:21 PM

Ok, hope this is the right section, will also apply to people buying donor cars.

I want to go and look at a car with thr purpose of buying it. How can I legally drive it back home. Chances are that i'll only be able to see it saturday afternoons, and sundays, when most (specialist) insurance places are shut. Given that it may well have been modified (LPG/Suspension etc) how can I take it home on the same day?

(I drive a company car, so will not be covered on other vehicles). Any suggestions? Is it possible to say buy a shorter insurance, then search around for a better yearly deal when the cheaper specialist offices are open?

I was under the impression that if you have fully comp insurance then you are entitled to drive any other car TPTF.

Are you sure you can't drive any other car

Many thanks for the links!

(I checked with head office, the car cover is a fleet cover, and doesn't apply to other cars).

Not sure if they are still doing it but HPI were offering 7 days free insurance from Norwich Union with an HPI check.

Be careful , a guy I work with told me last week that his daughters boyfriend brought a car that had a for sale sign on it by the side of the road He drove 400 yards and got stopped . The police had been keeping an eye on the car which although it was road legal was not covered by any insurance from the moment the buyer signed the registration docs to transfer ownership . The car is now likely to be crushed.

As rusty nuts said, if the car isn't insured then it's not covered under "drive any car" on a policy.

Also, if you own the car then you can't drive it on another policy as they don't cover you for a vehicle you own.

Get the guy to put it onebay for a pound with a buy it now. You come along 10 seconds later and buy it. Then ebay insaurance covers you (but maybe only up to a pound)

Do an RAC HPI check for £25 and you get 7 days free fully comp insurance.

You can buy day insurance (I think Norwich Union - amongst others do it)...I can't remember the web address though a google will probably yield a result! Oli.
