Storing - Towing Your Kit Car

Hi All,

First time poster long time lurker on these here forums. So Hello to everyone

I bought a pretty much finished Mac#1 ZR from the for sale forum here a few months back. The chap I bought it off was kind enough to trailer it over to my parents house for safe keeping while I get my own garage sorted and in order.

I was thinking the other day though (dangerous I know) about how I stand insurance wise while the car is over at my parents? Also will it be insured when I trailer it over to my house in a few weeks time? Also, do I need to have some kind of build insurance whilst I'm getting it finished in my garage, just incase the house burns down (God forbid!) or someone takes a liking to it and nicks it? or will it be covered on the house insurance?

Sorry for all the questions, I'm new to all this and it's all quite daunting!

My household insurance 'doesn't cover anything with wheels'.
That is their broad description of what they don't cover. They don't cover trailers, caravans, cars, tractors, busses etc. Or boats!
They do include lawnmowers with wheels and household items with wheels!
Whilst your car is being towed on a trailer, the car and the trailer will be covered by the towcars insurance but only third party. That means if the car falls off the trailer and squashes an old man, you will be covered but not the damage to your car/trailer.
I recommend a build insurance and read the policy carefully to make sure it includes all the things you want including the components not fitted but in storage, transporting, fire, building failure etc....
HTH.

As above, your house insurance wont cover it. Speak to a kitcar specialist like MSM insurance. Build up cover is pretty cheap for what it is and often you can get a discount on your premium when you come to insure it properly. As with all things its covered where ever it is, but you have to tell them where the car is kept at night. For example my road has lots of potholes so the Tiger lives at my parents 5 miles away. No problem at insurance time you just have to explain and give them the postcode the car lives at and not where you live....hope that makes sense! And welcome to the forum. How long till SVA day?? Oli.

Most of the kitcar insurers will quote you for storage and transport, separate from road insurance. I believe that it's not very expensive (after all, you're not driving it on the road). I think they sell it cheap in the hope that you'll go to them for the proper policy when you're ready.

Cheers folks,

I'll contact the kit car insurance companies and see what’s what as far as build insurance is concerned.

As for SVA, it'll be after Christmas now as work has gone bloody nuts the last few months and I seem to be living there at the mo. Then again I can't complain as it's the overtime that pays for these luxuries There's not a lot needs doing to finish it really. Fuel tank, seats, steering and suspension setup and a few other tweaks here and there. It almost sounds like I know what I'm talking about, nothing could be further from the truth in reality. The thought of the SVA brings me out in a cold sweat. I mean the most I've ever done to a car is service it, but places like this forum have just fuelled my urge to jump in and have a go!!

No doubt I'll have plenty of dumb questions to ask over the next few months/years so cheers in advance for any help!!

I got a "Build Up" Policy from Footman James. Was about £50 for the year, included any theft, accidental damage, fire etc, in the garage where it was stored / worked on. It even covered tools and parts not yet fitted to the car. I think it covered it whilst on a trailer to and from other garages etc.

And if you get finished within the year they will put any premium saved towards an on the road policy.

Cheers

Mike
