Reg number
Johnmor - 28/9/06 at 07:11 PM

Just recieved my Reg from DVLA, they gave me an age related plate, so thats a bonus.

I know this has been asked before .

Am i right in assuming that even with an age related plate i do not need an MOT for three years.

I will try to confirm this with the DVLA tomorrow but would like some other point of view to enable me to make a case if they are not sure.

Hi i believe that you would need an MOT for your car

I am on the understanding that only when you receive a new reg that the MOT would not have be taken
Maybe corrected soon though

They told me last week that no MOT needed for 3 years whether you get an age related plate of a Q plate.

Then again, I think they make it up as they go along

think it depends on if you got for an mot before the sva... once they have you on the sysem, you need one...

i was told no mot for 3 years, and the tax remider says the same

If you check your V5C when it arrives, it will state the year of manufacture as 2006, therefore NO MOT is required until 2009.

My mate has just been stopped by the police (about 2 months ago) and got told to take all his documents to the station..... he did, and was given the all-clear on the day - a few questions were asked about MOT, but he said as it was registered in 2005, you dont need one (even with an age related plate)....

anyway, he later recieved a court order for driving a car with no MOT and is currently being prosecuted. he has tried contacting DVLA, VOSA etc.. but noone will give it him in writing, so he's up sh*t creek now....

Just thought i'd mentioon it, as for £30 its probably worth it, just to keep the authorities happy, as ever, they don't have a clue what they're doing!

Tom
Your mate should start here http://www.vosa.gov.uk/vosa/mottestersgarageowners/mottesting/mottesting.htm

it says quite clearly that a car does not need an MOT until it has been on the road (registered) for 3 years

Is it a kit car that your mate has? Does his V5C state the year of manufacture as 2005 and was it SVA'd and registered correctly? Provided he hasn't had an MOT done since his vehicle was first registered, there is no requirement for an MOT for the first three years.

Words are cheap I know but I'm certain I've seen a link on DVLA's website which describes it in detail. Might be worth having a search on there to see if he can find it.

Another reason for not (still unproven legally) driving your car for a pre -SVA MOT

When I registered mine at beverley I received an age related plate. I was told that I could only buy 6 months tax as the latest rules for Kit Cars is that they have to have an MOT after 6 months then every 12 months.

All i know is that Stockton DVLA issued me with age related and very specifically said I do not need an MOT for 3 years. This was also confirmed 6 months after first registration when i tried to tax online and it kicked me out for not having an MOT. Another phone call to my mate Kelly and she very professionally stated that Swansea had made a blunder, i sent V5 back to her and she sent it off for me and sent me a tax disc.

Passed the SVA and got registered 2 years ago (almost to the day) with an age related 'S' registration.

I have not had an MOT nor have I needed one for taxing the car for the last 2 years and won't need one until Sept. 2007.

I think it depends on which way the wind is blowing when you register the car.
