can anyone tell me if i get a Q plate on my locost am i able to put a private plate on it at a later date or are you stuck to the Q plate
thanks

Scouse Monkey - 20/5/03 at 09:27 PM

stuck with it .

DVLA is supposed to be allowing you to change Q plates soon but still only for a Q. Not sure if you can get it reregistered later (if you suddenly find a V5) - anyone know?

|I shall give my usual response - why worry about a "Q" plate? Is it such a big deal?

I will be happy to get a Q plate, because:

- I can finally drive my car on the road!
- It shows that it's something special
- It has no "age" factor
- I have no wish to pretend that it's an older car

...just my 2p's worth!

My understanding is also that a Q is always a Q.

My views are about opposite from Davids!

Im trying to make my car look a bit 'retro' so a Q would screw that up a bit.

Also, I think some members of the public see a Q as something a bit 'dodgy' or a lesser kind of life.

After all, Q gets used for grey imports, stolen recovereds and cars of bastard origin. And kit cars with more than one traceable major donor.

Q is fine, cos as David says, it means you ahve a car. But I would consider it a minor disaster if my car was given one.

...but how many members of the general public (i.e. not car builders/dealers/repairers) know what a Q plate means?

Take you point about a Q plate on a Morgan replica, tho'.

Slight change of topic, buit if you have a donor age related plate is it ok to stick a private plate on it?

cheers,

Ned.

Ned,

Yes, believe that's the case.

David -

I recon the general public are aware that a Q is 'unusual' in that most people are very keen on what the letter says on their car - ie is it old or new. I have always thought of Q as 'unusual' well before I knew what it meant.

Ned - if your car has an age related plate it follows the normal rules - i.e, you can have any reg transferred to it that you want, as long as its not newer than the age related plate.

For instance, you cant get a 'G' on and 'E' plated car, but can have a 'C'.

What would be interesting is if you could have a plate from a retention cert at the time of registration. Normally you have to pay a change over fee......now wether thats the case for a car thats never been reg, I dunno.

what about non age related private plates steve?!

I think q's are unusual (and when a kid, thought they were rare! suppose they still are.)

sorry chaps, when i think of a q plater i always think of a bond bug i used to see up the road from me when i was a child.lol......a q is not for me chaps.cheers

I have another over-riding reason for my views on Q-plates...

My car is a real mongrel, made up of individual bits & bobs bought from everywhere under the sun. Because of this, I am a prime candidate for a Q plate.

Can I do anything about it? Little chance.
Any point in getting stressed about it? Nope.
So, do I care? Not in the slightest.

...more important things to worry about (like getting the bottom hose of my radiator connected).

regards,

David

If you were bothered you could allways get yourself a log book ..

You cant see em when your driving, and there is an added benefit on emisions at MOT if age isnt known.

I read somewhere (kitcar mag) that the Q plate was goung to change. In what way i don't know but i was also told that they are going to do away with the Q plate altogether!

Andy

Scotty - 22/5/03 at 07:34 AM

i read somewhere they were going to offer personalised q plates sometime in the next 12 months

Mark H - 23/5/03 at 12:41 PM

...but once purchased, they won't allow a "private" q plate to move cars. So get eg Q7 BOB. You'll then have to sell the car with the plate (ie can't move it to another project car). Sounds like a money making scheme (or tax on the vain!)

Only joking - I've got two on my "normal" cars, but at least they're transferable.

Now my car has been on the road for almost two weeks, i can confirm that i don't give a F#~k its on a Q. Point taken Steve, if you want it to look Morgan-esque. A Q would ruin the personality.

What i do care about is the fact that I've bent my first valve, and it's off the road!

My two penneth.

Regards,

Mark

I have to admitt that I totaly share Davids views. It's just a registration number..will it affect performance or handling? No. Will it affect my enjoyment of the car? No. Will it affect resale value? Possibly, although any impact is going to be minor considering the specialist nature of the car. Anyway, I want to drive it not sell it! I guess I'm the sort of person that would never waste money on a private number, even if I had loads to spare, I just don't see the point.

Grey imports normaly get an age related registration (mine certainly has), and stolen recovereds usualy retain their number IME.
