My father is looking at buying an mk indy he has seen forsale, we have been in touch with the owner and he said he hasnt got an sva certificate and the car was registered 2005 on a Q plate!!

Would this cause any problems in the future not having prove that it passed an SVA inspection??

My MAC or ministers Aproval Certificate (SVA certificate) was taken off me when I registered the car and never returned. I did pass the SVA though. Maybe he was answering your question literally.

The short answer is that he won't have an SVA certificate. It's taken fron you by the DVLA when you register the car.
A copy to keep would be nice I suppose, but not essential.
You will need to check out the V5 , to see if the chassis and engine number tally with it. You could always speak to the DVLA to see if it was SVA'd.

The SVA Certificate is taken by the DVLA when the car is registered so the driver will not get to keep it.
Have a look at the V5 to see what it is registered as. This would be a better indicator that it is genuine and will also contain the registration date.

As the others have stated check that the V5 says something like MK Indy and the chassis numbers, engine no's and reg all match up. If it says Dutton or Ford Escort / Sierra then you might have a problem!

The DVLA will issue either a Q plate, age related plate or new plate when you register the car for the first time. They will take the MAC certificate off you when you register it (although I kept a photocopy for my own satisfaction / records).

They will (should) issue a new plate if all the components are new (you are allowed 1 reconditioned component, usually the engine).

They will (should) issue an age related plate if you can prove that a significant amount of the parts used came from a single donor vehicle, i.e. the old sierra.

They will (should) issue a Q plate if you cannot prove enough parts came from a specific sierra. Quite a few BEC's end up with a Q because they don't use the engine / gearbox from the donor vehicle.

Q plate tends to mean visual smoke test only at MOT time, which makes life easier in the future.

I wouldnt worry to much about engine number

everyone has changed engines before although itll most likely be correct anyway

Thanks for all your replys, it makes a bit of sense now why he wouldnt have it.

I will take your advice and check the log book throughly and maybe contact dvla just to be safe.
