hydraulic handbrake

hydraulic handbrake is it sva legal or do i need to get some rear calipers? like does it have to be mechanical can it not be hydraulic.

i know its along way off before i need to worry about this but just so i can start looking for the parts now if need be

Rear handbrake has to be mechanical. Hydraulics are not allowed.

you can have a hydraulic handbrake if you can obtain an exemption from vosa but it might be a bit difficult for a one off

quads with these fitted have been given an exemption at present due the threat of legal action from the manufacturers

quads with hydraulic handbrake should pass an M.O.T. test at the moment but customer should be informed they may not pass in the future according to a recent VOSA message to testers

Because they are electromechanical, not hydraulic.

The electric actuators operate the cable's thus still making them still partially mechanical.


so does this mean, that i could do away with a handbrake and all the cabling, if i have some kind of electro mechanical system activate just by a switch?

not entirely sure how it would work, but despite not being far on at all with my build, the hand brake is the only thing i can't work out

actually i've been considering whether it would be possible to have a drive shaft handbrake, where a brake disk is located on the prop shaft and a caliper on the axle casing. search the net for 'drive shaft parking brake'

Excellent! that'll he how i do it then. on the prop. thing is, I know most of the donors for cars on this site have props that are bolted to a flange on the axle, sadly mine isn't. i'm sure it can be modified, mind you...

My car is a old race chassis i bought a fitting out for the road. its a pick up truck and is as wide and as long as a ford transit...
