Exposed Engine Bay
macnab - 22/1/07 at 02:53 PM

Just been looking in one of the kit car mags, I noticed some BEC’s running with the lower engine bay covering missing and to be honest I think it looks well cool. Rather like a motor bike in a way.

I was wondering if anyone sees any problem with getting through the SVA like that. Would the inspector start checking the radius of every nut and bolt on the engine! I hoped that the diagonal chassis brace would block the evil cone…

Any ideas?

do you mean 7's? are they not running side panels? don't really understand what you mean..!?!

Hmm I didn’t think when reading my post that it was particularly clear…

I mean the ally panel directly under the bonnet, the one that has the front wish bones going through it. I was thinking of just leaving it off.

Might kind of cool (and good for cooling) but you would just be asking for extra crap to be thrown up into the engine bay from the front wheels IMHO

true but this will be a dry weather only car, i.e. gets used 2 days a year

We have all said that at some point. What a mistake.

What about a perspex panel if you insist on doing it!

Cheers,
James

P.S. Some manufacturers (or MK atleast) have the side panel cut short to the point of 'about' the rear wishbone arm. You sure you're not just seeing this?

It's what I'll probably do on my next build... let out all that rad heat!

Wish I had scanned the photo I saw...

Had a look at it last night, one of the main reasons that they have left the panel off is that the BEC has a turbo inlet pipe actually hanging out the side of the car, must have run out of space!

I have the MK car and you’re right about the panel not going as far forward as normal i.e through the wish bones. Perspex is a good idea but I want to have it totally open right upto the footwell, I'll just keep all the nasty stuff like wiring and pipes high up under the bonnet.
