Next step, maybe a MOT then the SVA.
I've got my chassis number from the DVLA. I sent my V627/1 and V55/5 off on the 3rd January and didn't hear anything for a couple of weeks
or so. This I thought was typical of the DVLA so I phoned. Of course we all know you can't just phone your local office. I phoned Swansea,
explained the problem and they said someone would call within two hours. Sure enough I got a call from a young lady at Northampton. I explained that
I had sent my v627/1 and v55/5 at the beginning of January and hadn't heard anything. She said she would investigate and call me back. She did
phone back to say that she couldn't find my paper work and as the vehicle examiner was out of the office and she had locked everything up she
couldn't help me at this time. She would phone me when she had seen the VE. No phone call came. Tried phoning Swansea again but discovered that
they were all on strike, all I got was the busy tone. Phoned the next day and went through the usual procedure, someone would call within a couple of
hours. I did get a call and I explained all over again that I had sent in my V627/1 and V55/5 at the beginning of January and wanted someone to
examine my car and issue me with a chassis number. I got the usual "I'll go and find your documents and call you back". I didn't
hold much hope in getting a call but the bloke did call back. He had found my forms and explained that the vehicle examiner had been off sick for the
last two weeks and probably wouldn't be back for at least another one. He suggested that they should issue a chassis number now and I could get
the car examined after the SVA. This sounded good to me as it removed a possible big problem of getting the car down to the DVLA office if they had
insisted on examining it there. I got the letter on Friday, stamped a plate up and welded it on today.
Next step, maybe a MOT then the SVA.
So was the local Vehicle Examiner just OUT or OFF SICK, come to that do they know the difference between the two different states of not being
there.

If it was easy we would have nothing to tell our family and friends.
I love these DVLA / VOSA threads I would not normally believe how many different ways people get treated by them.

Why is it the V.E. is always ill/on holiday etc?
When I had to get a vin number from Northampton the examiner was going to come and look at the car on a set date. On the day I got a phone call to say
he was ill and would rearrange at a later date.
I didnt hear anything for 3 months and when I next called was told that he had left and they didnt do home visits anymore. After arranging to trailer
the car there I arrived and the examiner was away on a training course and had overlooked my appointment.Luckily another person was volunteered to do
the inspection but as he had not done one before I had to tell him what was what and show him the engine number etc, my vin arrived in the post the
next day so was eventually ok.
When I registered the car it was easy with no problems, apart from not recieving the logbook, I called Swansea and enquired after it and was told they
had no record of the car which I had been driving for 3 months. It turned out that the paperwork had become lost somewhere between Northampton and
Swansea.

Good to hear its almost there, remember that an MOT isnt essential but if you have one then the car will need an MOT from the first year onwards
instead of after 3 years.
Hurry up and get it SVAed and we can start to arrange some Northants area runs out when the weather gets better, there will be a few of us with cars
on the road this year.

erm sorry but thats not quite correct, I have listed ALL the DVLA local office numbers a really long time ago.

That list must be rather old and issued before they centralised the contact method. If you try and ring the Northampton office number you get a BT
recorded message that tells you the number is not available.

Yes I realise that getting a MOT now means that the DVLA system will always state that the car needs one. This, you do/you don't need a MOT
business is a bit of a grey area. I believe some DVLA offices insist that that your car passes an MOT before they will register it, if it contains
secondhand parts. I'm not sure if Northampton is one of them but getting a MOT has a few benefits.
1) Once insured I can drive the car to the MOT station.
2) I can check the headlights, emissions and brakes before the SVA.
3) The car gets checked over by someone else and certifies it roadworthy.
4)The MOT could be useful to show the police, if I'm stopped on the way to the SVA, that the car is basically roadworthy and not an accident
waiting to happen.
So I will probably get one.

On the tyre issue - tread depth isn't tested by SVA bloke, they can be as bald as you like as long as the markings on the sidewall are correct!

When time came to get my car inspected came around i just wrote to the local office. Next day a very nice and knowledgable young lady called me to
arrange home visit and confirm my proposed chassis number was fine. I then had her direct dial number. Job sorted.
She brought the forms out with her and even helped me complete them. Stockton always get a big thumbs up from me.
Even after SVA when i needed to re-tax after 6 months, i found i couldnt do it online as it was asking for an MOT. A call on her direct line resulted
in me sending V5 back to her, she issued road tax very quickly and sent the V5 off to DVLA to be ammended. I now have fingers crossed that it was done
correctly when i get car out of winter hibernation.
Well done Geoff, let's hope it won't be too long before you get it on the road.
