Do i need a collapsable boss for my mountney wheel as well as having the collapsable sierra column? Got a centre pad for the wheel, and would prefer
to fit it from the start cos my legs barely fit under the sierra one
David
i assume you mean for SVA. All i can say that for my test i had a problem using std Sierra wheel. I fitted my aftermarket SWM wheel which complies to
radius rules etc, the tester made me fit a collapsible boss even though i was using the collapsible sierra column. His argument was that the steering
wheel and boss forms the type aproval for the whole steering system, therefore changing the wheel also negates the type approval meaning the new
collapsible boss is an SVA requirement.
Does that make sense.
Worth contacting your local centre if you need clarification from them as this may be one of the interpretation areas.
Ref your legs point. My father failed his first test using the Sierra wheel in a MK locost chassis due to its low position. My father could drive the
car no problems but the tester said he had insufficient control of the vehicle!!! I think an XR3 wheel was used instead which was a couple of inches
smaller.
Welcome to the wacky world of SVA!!!!!
Thanks a lot Darren Will give the local centre a call when I get home.
Cheers,
David
My Sierra column, colapsable boss & Momo wheel with pad passed without a problem
By seirra column do you mean the actual column that applies the twisting force or the black outer collapsable column?
Im using the black outer column and machining a grove in my quick release boss for it to sit in, That should be ok?
Are you modifying the column to accept the quick release before SVA Gav? Im sure some people have had problems using quick release for SVA. I guess
you can still fit std wheel though.
Use of QR coupling seems to be one of those grey areas worth checking up on with your local centre.
The boss i have is a willwood one i think, bought from this site.
You weld one bit to the column itself and is a hex drive which you slide the part bolted to the wheel on to. it is this bit ive machined a small
groove just big enough to accept the sierra outer collapsable column, it is also this outer column im mounting the pivot boss for the paddle
change.
Although ive not welded the QR drive on yet here is a pic of the pivot boss

Can the quick release be operated and the wheel removed whilst the engine is running or is it a lockable one?
If it can be removed with the engine running then it will fail SVA
Passed SVA @ Mitcham with standard Sierra column and Mountney boss and wheel.
