Steering Boss
mistergrumpy - 6/3/07 at 09:32 PM

Quick question. Does this need to be an approved item or can I knock summat up myself and does it need to be collapsible (though it probably will be, don't fancy being speared through the chest!!).
Cheers all

No reason that it can't be a home built one as long as it looks the part it probably won't get a second look anyway.

Just fancied a bash at making one, dunno why. Unless Halfords are having more sales

i have a caterham one you can have for the price of the postage and a beer, it has splines insted of the sierra hex

I made my own mountney one as the available bosses were terrible quality to the extent that the steering lock wouldn't work, so I butchered the sierra wheel and took out the boss section and made a collapsible boss. Passed SVA with no problems Rescued attachment Crappy casting.jpg

Thanks for the photos Mark, was looking for summat like that. I don't have a Sierra wheel to butcher but I've noticed that yours has a nut on't top, mine has a bolt in't end.
Graeme, my column don't have splines its hexagonal but do you think I could doctor the one you have, it'll do me great if so.

Your column with the bolt instead of a nut is a bit newer, both columns have the hexagonal taper, you should be able to get a sierra wheel for free.

I have more pickies if needed

should be able to file out the material.

the collapsible boss thing (similar to one sold by RD I beleive) - what thickness steel did you make it?

I ask since I am considering making one to move my wheel closer to me (already have one but could do with another inch or two )

(I realsie I can measure my iown just be interesting to see how it compares)

All made from 3mm plate, chain drilling the upper plate was a bit tedious, but worth it in the end
