speedo sensor

i want to mount my speedo sensor on the o/s front upright, will this be an issue with the sva? ie: does it have to be mounted on a driven wheel or prop? im using a koso rx1n clock. anyone else using this type? any help would be appreciated.

I could be wrong on this, but I think I recall someone having a problem with a speed sensor when it was reading differently on one side than the other, but I don't know exactly what the problem was since there are more than a few people out there who have mounted the speed sensor on a drive shaft!

I'm sure someone on here can correct/amend my story to be a little more accurate!

it has to be mounted on a driven wheel as they drive your chariot on rollers to check speedo

yeah i would agree with conrodkid as its driven up on the rollers, not by the rollers.

At my first SVA they said cos they couldn't assess the speedo on the rollers they'd do so in the car park by driving the vehicle!!! The examiner only complained (and failed it) when he couldn't see the bike speedo because I'd put in line-of-sight through the steering wheel for me (with a tall back) and he was a short arse....

Rules might have changed since then (or he might have been liberally interpreting them)...

I had a similar problem with SVA a few years ago (Fisher Fury). I'd fitted the sensor to the front upright (very nicely done) and they insisted it should be on a driven wheel as they couldn't test it. Of course, a driven wheel may be less accurate if you're getting wheelspin!!

I had to move it to the prop for the retest - bast*rds!

Phone your intended sva centre and ask them - perhaps you could take along a GPS.

Also wont be acccurate on the front when the wheel is on the inside of a turn.

as already said^^^

but depends on the type of rollers at the center.

you would need rollers for front and rear for your speedo to be ableto read; I donlt think they have anything like that in most centres.

so in short, no.

even if you mount on rear, that may not work, as in my case, since you need both wheels to be running at same speed - I had diff action so one wheel was stationary,m other runing at 2x

I had to go to rolling road with one rear roller (SVA centre has 2 so can measure brake effficiency on each wheel separately) and get a print out, cost £££

fitting to prop, hmmm, that is spinnig about 3x what your wheels are - not sure the speedo can be adjusted for that. (you'll be looking at a 9 inch wheel )

why would you take along a GPS, if it's done on the rollers (and therefore at a standstill in terms of actual motion) then it won't be that accurate really will it?

But if it can't be done on the rollers because they can't drive the front wheels then you can drive along and calibrate against the GPS!

And how is that different from the rear wheels? If it was different then the differential wouldn't have been invented.

To do it properly you need to measure both undriven wheels and take the average. (assuming 4 wheels, one in each corner)

erm, maybe wrong, but aren't there loads with the sensors mount above the propshaft

This has worried me,
ive just bound and fixed my loom in place with the sender wires finishing at the front hub as sugested by the revotec man at stoneleigh where i bought my instruments.
I rang the sva helpline who said that as the test centers only had a single set of rollers they could not test if on the front wheels however if i had the speed independently tested they would except it.

re: the gps idea - they have to verify up to 70mph - they won't be able to do that at the test centre....

where would you be able to get it calibrated for it to pass? hass anybody fitted a koso semsor to the prop if so let me know how you done it and how you mounted the magnets.

If its anything like the Acewell ones, I mounted my magnet on one of the inboard CV joints and just made a bracket that goes on the diff mounts to hold the sensor.

im using a live axle so its going to have to be mounted on the prop.

It doesn't have to be on a driven wheel, mine was mounted on the front wheel. So when they tried to test it on the rollers they couldn't, the testers comments were we've seen it working in the carp park so that's fine.
