getting my kitcar to the SVA station.
alexdj125 - 23/6/07 at 07:39 PM

I've was told the other day that I could drive my kitcar to the SVA station on the morning before its test, like you can drive a car with no MOT to a test station if it is being taken there to have one done. Is this true? and if so, how as I thought they allocated your number plate after the test, so that wouyld mean driving with no plates, meaning no insurance, and of course no tax. Please help!!! Thanks, Alex.

as long as its pre arraged you are aloud to drive to it, you need to have insurance but you can get insured against the chassis number until you have your reg allocated

Hi you insure it on your chassis number it states this on the insurance cert

I got mine insured on the chassis number by Sureterm Direct, confirming with them that I could drive it to the SVA station. I drove it to and from an MOT before the test too. Twice And then to the SVA station, twice

I got a few funny looks from other drivers as I didn't have any plates on, but I still get them now it's got them!

The only place I wasn't allowed to drive it to was the local DVLA office, as it wasn't taxed!

I had to trailer it there?

A lot of insurance companies only allow 30 days on a chassis number, Footman James however will allow extensions over 30 days if required. Make sure you have the appointment confirmation letter with you when driving to SVA test.

Make sure you take the insurance covernote and your driving licence as well . You MAY be able to drive to DVLA inspection depending on which DVLA center you go to Peterborough told me it was OK but others say no . Check firts

Yup. You can drive to SVA as long as you're insured.... Not sure a "3rd party insurance on any car with owner's permission" type cover would be enough though (like I've got as standard on my tintop).... So it's a gamble- a lot of insurance jobs are non-refundable with only a limited time for you to give them the registration number (they'll do a temp reg on the chassis number). If you fail SVA on anything big (ie big enough to delay an SVA pass until after the deadline allowed by the insurance company) you might lose the insurance (and the money...).....

I know really your only supposed to drive to and from a place of importance to do with the car ie SVA work done at MOT station

however my insurance certificate the other day said for social domestic pleasure and thats exactly what I did

how the hell am I supposed to test the brakes work or speedo healer etc without going for a little thrash

zxrlocost has got a point,

ive driven my car to the top of the street and back and ive got some right dodgy looks from the neighbours!!!

but you have got a point, how the hell are you supposed to test the brakes and speedo etc if you can drive it about, if you are running a magnet induced speedo and the only time you can drive the car is on the way to the sva centre, if the speedo isn't calibrated properly then your screwed!

Most SVA centres will let you adjust the speedo on the rollers if its really quick to do, as with the electronic ones.

As for getting there I am renting a trailer/transporter to get it there. And then am driving it back. Insured through AF.

deciding where you can drive is obviously a personal decision, you are advised to read the actual law for yourself before deciding where to go! Plod wont be impressed if he catches you hooning around and your only defense is 'i read it on locostbuilders!'
