SVA Fail at Norwich
ditchlewis - 3/7/07 at 02:56 PM

well it failed, only on a few points.

head of the front indicator was loose.

emissions excessive (co2 ok, Hydrocarbons well over) this was due to the missfire it developed on the way up. one cylinder was not fireing and so pumped all the petrol out...

upper seat belt mounts too low (due to to much padding in the seat bases.

the hand brake cover i used was not radiused to 3mm.

front coil spring collar not covered (protek the collar had gaps for the c spanner that need protecting)

fuel filter bracket of inadequate strength and durability

no evidence of a locking devise on the front brake calipers

speedo not working (checked when i got home and the magnets had come off)

the lock on the stearing rack is to much and puts pressure on the flexable pipes as they inter the caliper, and the track rods touch the wing bracket.

all in all a fair test.

there is a trainee tester currently at norwich so the test took 4 hours and there were many by the book discussions and advice taken from the old hand.

some of the faults have already been put right, so its off to the garage again after seeing Rod Stewart tonight.

Sounds like a pretty reasonable fail....

New plugs should do the emissions (or was it a loose HT lead??? )

When's the retest???

ditchlewis - 3/7/07 at 03:05 PM

i've swapped the plugs around and that did not help. so new leads it is

got to rebook yet but soon i hope, i will have to be sick that day

the other thing that happened was a fuse blew and i had no lights this was the first test fixed it whilst they had a brew.

Get it done quick, I want to see the girocopter started

David Jenkins - 3/7/07 at 03:34 PM

I went over to Capel on the off-chance to see if Ditch was back home - had a quick chat and a nose about. Everything's easily fixable I reckon.

Well done!

ditchlewis - 3/7/07 at 03:44 PM

it was a good suprise to see you david.

yes it is all easily fixable, just time. at least the wife is working some nights this week so i will have some garage time.

i was down to sart with but by the time i got home it was all ok.

at least i had a good 100 mile round trip.

that's not a bad fail at all, let's hope Rob Stewart can fix it. (think Jim wouldhave been better).

David Jenkins - 3/7/07 at 05:17 PM

I hope you got it back under cover in time, before the lightning/rain/hail hit! As I was talking to Ditch, we could see huge black clouds developing not too far away.

According to the local news, Capel got 12mm of rain in 20 minutes.

Lucky your SVA wasn't this afternoon!

Was also just quandering this as I forgot to put on the retaining/anti rattle brake pad springs on the front. No questions asked tho.

Not a bad fail tho really, seems pretty straight forward fixes and should prove to be a sucessfull retest. It is a semi nice feely that after spending all of that time building/swearing and distroying your knuckles that nothing major fails. Looks a good motor!!

the retaining/ locking for the front brake calipers was one that took me by suprise, it is about holding the caliper to the hub, but locktite will be sufficent as long as you give the answer when asked... i knew i had failed by that time so i did not bother bulls~~~ing. i suppose that locking washers may be acceptable but the ford sierra did not have them.

yes i got in before the rain and got brownie points for remembering the washing

glad we had not paid for tickets to sit on the pitch, they were soaked Rod had to stop to dry his equipment out
