Well here we go,

I'm about to fill in my application forms for the SVA (it will be Norwich for me). A few questions just to make sure the application goes smoothly

1) What are the rules about VIN number i.e. how many/few letters numbers etc. constitutes acceptable etc. How about personal initials and say date of birth (even if a little self-indulgent)

2) Suggestions on make and model - Locost 7? or can it be anything you like!

3) suggestions on Q 13 - max speed/revs. This is a 1600 GT Crossflow

4) Presumably we are class 'A'?

i am sure someone will be along in a minute with a more authoritive answer. on my chassis number i had my iniatials and the words mk inindy. i think you can have anything as long as it is 17 digits and a mix of numbers and letters and is unique obviousley. i seem to remember there being something about the digit 1 and the letter I but check with swansea. do not accept there " you must have an allocated number" twoddle.

for make and model i put MK indy, if only to appaese the tester into a false sense of security at sva and maybe for a better resale if i ever sold it.

for spped revs and speed, round down the revs to a sensible figure as they will use 75% of that figure for your sound test so the lower the better and speed is for checking your tyres are rated correctley so agian the lower the better. maybe 110mph and 5000 rpm.

For personalised VIN number i sent a letter to local DVLA office first to confirm if they were happy for me to use my proposal. I got a very fast reply to say no probs. This way takes the risk out and also gives you a contact for registaration phase.

i used something like 5500 rpm and 110 mph, but the tester already knew what it should be and did the noise test accordingly (despite what i put on the form).

I think you can put make and model down as you like. Same will be used for registration iirc.

It is best to check with the local DVLA office re the VIN number before applying for SVA. Some insist on (or at least try to) choosing your VIN for you. Which was a problem for me as I'd passed SVA with a VIN of my choosing. They were trying to get me to change it, but they weren't sure if they'd accept the MAC on the old chassis number.....
