Out of interest who are people using for breakdown cover for their locosts? I will be after some very basic recovery cover once the car is on the road.

Hi mate,

Mines included with my £200 year premium with Sureterm (I think) or maybe I'm with Footman James can't remember - all I know is it was bloody cheap! and included european cover!

Most bank accounts, insurance companies are throwing this support in nowadays - might pay to check your bank account etc - as that will cover you across ALL cars.

The AA is £40 for a basic service last time I looked.

Cheers,

Murray

Just be careful to check what level of cover is provided... Quite a few of the breakdown services have exclusion criteria...

Actually, even when you don't fulfil any of the exclusion criteria they'll often try and get out of sorting things out.... My bro had full-on European cover with IIRC the AA. The sump plug came out on a French Autoroute resulting in a knackered engine.. They gave him a hire car etc so he got back to blightly okay but when he rang to ask when his car was going to be repatriated they said "when you organise and pay for it".... Despite repatriation being part of the cover offered they tried to wangle out of it. They even suggested going 50/50 on costs until my brother explained he was a barrister and that the terms of the breakdown contract are quite clear... Then they repatriated his car....

I joined the AA when I broke down. I rang them up and asked if I joined could they send someone out straight away. They replied by saying

"yes but the level of cover you'll have to get costs £150"

I assumed it was top banana cover (hence the ability to use it straight away). Unfortunately when I broke down a few months later I found out they'd given me £38 roadside only and charged me £112 for the initial callout.....

Little frickers....

I'd go with Green Flag

European cover included in my Footman James policy at no extra cost. Not used it (yet) but the policy looks OK.

I have European Cover with Flux for £38.
I blew the engine on the way to Le Mans and they were worse than useless.
They can't recover from French motorways as french law doesn't allow it so you have to get french breakdown to get you off the motorway.

Then they tried to send a mechanic to verify if the car could be sorted, despite me telling them that it had thrown a rod.

Then they sent a spectacle lift to collect me but it couldn't because of ground clearance.
7 hours later when I got to a garage I had to arrange my own taxi and hotel for the night (it's a good job I speak some french!!)
I spent most of the next day chasing them to sort a hire car out.

It goes on...

The only thing they did well was get the car back to UK. I came back with friends on Monday and my car turned up a work on Tuesday night. I had already started making arrangements to get it back through french contacts at work!!

Will I take the cover out again???? YES!!! It was a pain in the backside but it still saved me the cost of a hire car/hotel/repatriation etc. and perhaps if it had only been a spark plug they might have been more use.

For info they were based in Holland and always answered by the name of one of the larger insurance companies.

Yes- my bro had that problem (I forgot).... He had to arrange someone to tow it off the autoroute onto a local road....

Seems strange they'll quite happily leave you in a seriously dangerous situation but jump to action (as long as it isn't lunchtime!!) once you're out of the dangerous situation.....

I use GEM assist. Last year paid about 90 quid for personal cover for myself and the mrs, including kit cars - and it works because they recovered me a few weeks ago

Their basic cover starts pretty cheap because you can pay for "reclaim" service, i.e. you pay them a little, then if you need recovering you pay a local recovery firm then claim the cost back - so you only pay more if you actually use them. More like insurance really.

They don't do european cover as standard though i don't think.

Went with a mate to Nottingham SVA with his Tiger, he ripped the sump plug off on the brake roller On my membership, the RAC took us back to Sheffield dropped mate and Tiger at his home and took me back to Chesterfield.
Used the RAC 5 times in the last 3yrs service could not be better. (This is the opinion of the poster.Other breakdown services are available)

RAC left me stranded at Gosforth after second SVA (that i had passed - core plug failed when i was pulling car out of their workshop). My Dad tried to use his cover as he was passenger - they however said they wouldnt recover the car as it wasnt registered. I had to pay for a recovery truck to collect us.
