Scrapping the donor ?
nick205 - 22/9/03 at 12:51 PM

Right - stripped the Sierra, now left with a metal box to dispose of.

1. What do I need to tell the DVLA
2. What documents/records should I keep to help register the kit car and get an age related plate?

Cheers for any info.

Nick

keep the V5, tell the scrappy man your keeping it for a kit car. also the number plates and possible cut out the vin plate.

Maybe write a brief letter to DVLA telling them (quite important for SORN), though i haven't bothered yet.

for the age plate, keep reciepts for everything u can, including the ones for the metal to prove its new.

Yeah - don't forget to fill out a SORN - I did cost me £25 fine and no end of grief from the other half

GO - 22/9/03 at 04:31 PM

Yep, I forgot the whole SORN thing too. 25 quids worth of beer I had to miss out on

JoelP - 22/9/03 at 04:54 PM

now i think about it, i got fined at first too! quite an earner that innit?

was gonna argue that the letter got lost in the post but couldn't be arsed with the hassle, should work theoretically. tell em you filled in the SORN form and send them in the direction of royal mail to find it! they couldn't prove anything....

Me too!

They've set it at that kind of level (probably) so that people don't bother complaining! £60 and everyone would use the "sent it to the PO" story, or start a revolt.

In fact, if i recall, I sent them a letter with that story in it (actually true in this case!) plus the £25 cheque! Tw@

You don't need to post it to them, just fill it in and hand it over the counter as you would a road fund application and make sure they give you a receipt for it.

yours, Pete.

Ours is nearly ready to be taken away now too. I did send of a SORN but it came back saying "you aren't the registered keeper". Queue prodding of previous owner to send off V5, he said he had, but that he'd check also. Looks like I'll have to send off a new reg document if it doesn't come this week. Arse. We want rid asap...

You can still ditch the shell and sort the documentation as and when you can!

Anyway, it must happen all the time with private car sales that the seller doesn't bother sending his half off. I'd be interested to know the legal implications of it being 'in limbo'.

Sorry to be ignorant but what is SORN.
I have re regested the donor in my name and stripped all the bits, just sent the shell to the scrap man. I have obviously missed something?

Mon brave. A (S.O.R.N ) is a Statutory Off Road Notice.. You have to either tax the vehicle or send one of these blasted things in to the DVLA.....if you don't you'll get a nice letter from them demanding £25.
Then you either pay up or argue. I did the latter on the premis that the bloody thing was untaxed when I bought it and the previous owner should have done it. Not so they replied, but did accept my excuse and just asked me to complete one and send it in However, it's risky cos you are required in law as the new keeper to fill one in regardless of what the previous owner did or not. So they could have still demanded the fine.

You can get one from the post office.... Do it quick!

Thanks (Post Office first thing tomorrow)
You have just saved me £25.

JoelP - 24/9/03 at 07:49 PM

if someone sells a car and doesnt fill in the V5 and get the new keeper to sign it, they are responsible for the vehicle until it is re-registered, my mate ended up in court for countless parking tickets and a few camera flashes as well.

they didn't believe he'd sold it, and he couldn't prove he had. nearly got hung for it, but the judge said something like 'ok but dont do it again', which was nice....

now where did i see that line recently, eh pete?!

but the moral of the story is reregister your car when you sell it or lie.

you can get a big fine, though i dont think they would actually hang you unless it had no tax as well.

Went to the Post Office, They said they don't have SORN forms. Rang Swansea, they have to send you a form in the post.

Bloody paperwork

MK Goldrush - 25/9/03 at 11:52 AM

Download one from DVLA website, fill it in and stick it in post.
