Threads showing?
tegwin - 3/2/08 at 12:37 PM

Is Mr SVA man going to be looking at all the nuts and bolts to see if there is enough thread sticking out of the nut?

On a locknut (m8 in this case), how many threads should I have showing?

I think you can get rubber covers for them

Some say 1.5 threads showing, some say as long as it clears the nylock, it's fine...

If you want a definitive answer, just contact "your" SVA guy and ask him!

Haha...LOL!! Rubber covers glued inplace and the sva guy will never know

1.5 is what I was always told, seems to be standard practice on aircraft...

i'd have said 4, but what do i know

I've been taking the view that 2 avoids any 'discussion' with the tester as 1.5 is an accepted minimum from previous threads.

Trying to hide too few is just asking for trouble, both from the tester, and from a safety point of view.

Too many and you're just adding unnecessary weight (no point worrying about 1 or 2, but adds up if every bolt is well over length).

In my experience bolts are never the right length, too long or too short! I a happy getting a turn out of the nylock, at SVA all the visible ones had to have covers on anyway, I didn't even get comments where I had used a plain nut with loctite though this was not obvious.

As long as I am happy as I will be the mad fool driving the thing i am Ok with it.

Definitely have two threads showing above the nut - it is safe for you and Mr SVA won't question it
