Someone has offered to take what's left of the escort off my hands, but I don't really know what I need in terms of vin plates and stuff. Also I want to make sure my locost retains th registration of the escort, as it would be tax free...
Planned to use the engine, gearbox, rear axle and steering rack from the escort. Is this enough for the locost to retain th i.d., and how does it work??

any advice would be greatly appreciated.!!

I don't know where you stand with someone taking the shell off you regards the V5, but I can tell you that you will get an age related plate (not the one the escort has, but the same suffix). Also I'm sorry to have to tell you this but with the escort being modified a bit, i.e. now a locost it doesn't qualify anymore for 'free tax', I can't find the URL but I'm sure it will be confirmed by other members of the site.

If you go HERE you will see where I got this quote

'If a new monocoque bodyshell or chassis from a specialist kit manufacturer is used (or an altered chassis/bodyshell from an existing vehicle) together with two major components from a donor vehicle, an age related mark will be assigned. The mark will be based on the age of the donor vehicle. An SVA test will be required to register the vehicle.'

Al little bit disappointed about the whole tax free thing, but hey...thats the way the cookie crumbles. Is there any advantage to an age-related plate to a Q plate?

Also from your quote "The mark will be based on the age of the donor vehicle" - I can't see what relevance that has on getting cheap tax or not. Surely if its on an "old" reg plate, then tax would be free?

Or am i just being thick?

someone pointed out that Q plates dont get emission tested i think. is that true/ remembered correct? could be useful in some circumstances...

I've been Googling and came across this page, give it a read. I managed to score 5 points with the Axle, Gearbox and Engine and maybe another 1/2 on the steering

As for Q plates and emissions test, I found THIS LINK.

Cars with a ‘Q’ plate are regarded as being of uncertain age so therefore will continue to be subject to the visible smoke test. We think this will suddenly make ‘Q’ plates cool again!

With a Q plate you cannot change the plate - in other words if you want to put a personal plate on and have a Q you can't. With an age related plate you can, provided it will not make the car look newer than it is.

vin plate (riveted inside the engine bay)
numberplates
and the v5 (of course)

It's just that I have two options, and would like to make it as easy as possible.

1) Use all the bits I can from the single donor, which includes a 1.3 engine and a 4 speed 'box, neither of which I particularly wanna use. This would give me an age related plate.

2) Use the good parts from the donor, recently reconditioned back axle and steering rack, wiring loom, propshaft etc but would leave me to source a good i.e 1600 engine and preferably a 5 speed 'box.

Would probably rather the second, but would give me a 'Q' plate. Really don't want to spend much money on a 1300 crossflow just to get the car through a test, then pay even more for a decent engine!!

Any suggestions??

Also, wanted to change the 9904169, but can't figure out how!

maybe get it thru SVA with the 1300 to ensure an age plate, then swap it afterwards. Wouldnt be too hard. just tell the DVLA that it has a new engine in.

Or do what I've seen someone suggest on here before: register the engine you want into the other donor car before you kill it. then "lots the parts come from the same donor" in the eyes of the DVLA.

note I have only heard this discussed, I don't know if it actually would work.

yeah, thats been suggested my a friend of mine, but trouble is, I don't really want to spend a whack of money on my engine, when the thing won't be runing tll next summer (thats the plan anyway).

Might get it through the test with the 1.3 then change. Plus, wouldn't the SVA tester be a little less suspicious with a 1.3 than if a 21 year old turned up with a 1.7 on twin 40's?

Think he would hammer me if that was the case!!

That should be nothing to do with the SVA tester - so long as your insurance (and bank) are happy about it.

Surely SVA testers is unbiased about who builds what - so long as it is built according to the regs.

I hope not, as im 19 and going to be running a 2.1 litre pinto on 45s and various other go fast modifications.

Hurrah for kitcar insurance (less than my 1.25 fiesta!!!)
