Cat C Road Tax
bonzoronnie - 12/2/08 at 10:04 AM

Hi all.

I am about to return an accident damaged car to the road.

This was a Cat C insurance loss that will require a VIC.

I have had the car MOT'd & have booked the VIC ( Tomororow )

I thought it would then be a simple matter of sending the paperwork to my local licenceing office for the road tax.

Looking at the DVLA wb site. It looks as if it is now impossible to tax a vehicle unless you have a V5 issued in your name.

Will this mean that i will have to apply for the V5, then sit and wait untill DVLA send you the new V5.

I have not repaired any accident damaged cars since the rules were changed a few years back.

Back then, it was a simple matter of sending the paperwork to my local office in order to tax the car.

Has anyone repaired a cat C recently & managed to tax it at a local office without the V5.

Ronnie

I think you will need a VIC check first and the Truro office doesn't do visit, you have to take the car there and put it in a parking bay.

Oh the car isn't allowed to be driven there either.

[edit] should of read the post, are they comming out to you, they told me that they coun't vist and i had to take my car to Truro

I think they can isue a tax disk immediately if you g into the DVLA office, theoretically they should key the information in and you should also be able to get the tax from the online system immediately after inspction, having said that it took two different inspectors to be able to correctly read the VIN on my locost!

The VIC will be conducted at the Redruth VOSSA test station.

According to the station manager. It is fine to drive to the test, providied you have a valid MOT & Insurance cover to do so.
It is permissible to drive to a pre arranged VIC without road tax.

The problem is. That once the car has passed its VIC it looks as if it cannot be taxed until the new V5 has been issued.

In days gone by.

It was a simple matter of filling in a V62 & V10 sending them to the local tax office with the MOT & insurance certificate .

They would issue the road tax & DVLA would send the new V5 to you at a later date.

This now seems, not allowed annymore.

When I did this (Tail end of last year) I just popped into the local DVLA office after the VIC with the paperwork issued (at the VIC). They can and will give you a tax disc and you can also apply for your V5 at the same time. You will need Insurance docs/MOT etc.

This was in Kent but I am aware that DVLA practice tends to very from region to region
