Using V5 as proof of age?
tegwin - 12/2/08 at 01:38 PM

I have just recieved my date for SVA at Avonmouth... I have a lot of work to do between now and then!

They want me to take proof of age with me... Can I use the donor cars' V5 logbook or do I need something else?

Its a sierra based 1600 pinto

You need a letter from Ford based on the engine number not the VIN.

There is a huge possibility there is YEARS between the car being made and the engine...

Does the Burtons catlogue still have engine dates in it? Not sure if that's accepted as "official" proof of engine age for SVA purposes but @ my SVA test they were more than happy with the Haynes manual which isn't any more reliable

you'll get there and he'll say - 'well did you bring your birth certificate?'

only kidding

NS Dev - 12/2/08 at 01:47 PM

Not correct!

Yes, you can use the donor V5 as proof of engine age.

I certainly did, at Nottingham VOSA centre, last April, with no problem at all.

not sure if 2008 catalogue has it but the older ones did. I have a vcouple of this on t he "throw away" pile so can post to you if you get stuck.

And yes, my SVA people were happy with it.

If you write to Ford with the engine number they will give you written confirmation.

Mine came back quite quickly and it doesn't cost anything other than a stamp.

Faxed mine to them and got a reply next day, didn't cost a penny.

NS Dev, So I produce my 1993 Sierra V5 that shows my 1994 1.8 zetec engine number? Do you think the tester would be fooled? I don't think so. I've heard it being questioned in the past. You may have just got lucky

Seriously the V5 and a Burtons catalog has been fine for many people

I supose if the car was registered in 1988 there is no way the engine is going to be any younger than that.....so I should be able to get away with that....

Might give him a ring and see though

Not sure the significance, but I used my donor V5 for proof of age and mine was a 1989 Pinto Engine in a 1988 car, didn't even raise an eyebrow, he just check that the engine number on the block was what was on the V5.

I suppose if the engine wasn't originally fitted to the donor, it may raise some questions

I'm with NSDEV here - I produced V5 at SVA and it was deemed enough. I'd previously gone to the trouble of registering an engine change so the V5 had the right number on it though

Well that's me and about 500 other people then cos I know of a huge number that have done it.

They are not stupid at the SVA centre (in my experience).

If the "donor" v5 shows a sensible age, that type of engine was fitted to that car and the ages on the castings check out reasonably then they have no reasonable grounds for doubt.

Mine never batted an eyelid at the v5 I submitted as proof, and it was only an engine donor, and actually only really donated the block, the rest was off other engines.

I never hid anything, I told them the bits on the car were from all over the place!
