Lets start with the fact that I hate the DVLA.

The story so far….

2 months before SVA make my own chassis number up and take it to the DVLA 0ffice they spend 20 mins checking its ok and final tell me I can use it.

PASS SVA – the simple bit!!!!

Fill in forms at dvla– book inspection – pay for it and road tax

Make several phone calls to see if there is any way they will come out to inspect it. – no chance

Arrange for my car to be taken there on Thursday.

NOW the DVLA phone up and tell me I can use the chassis number due to a problem with it. – They will not explain any more than this. They cancel my inspection and give me a phone number to call.

Phone the number ( BSI ) and they say the will not talk to me until I email them.

Have sent an email now and wait to find out what’s wrong with the number that they originally said I can use.

Its 17 characters long – all the letters and digits are acceptable , all she would say at dvla was it is to do with the arrangement of them and British standards?

come down here to northampton, once the SVA MAC certificate has the chassis number on they accepted it here, jyst travel wdown the motor way for an hour

do they spell a rude word?
do they include a trade marked word?

can you u2u me number? (not that I would use it since mine is registered but curious).


strange thing is for SVA, you can choose any number and there is possiblility that by the time you come to register, someone has nabbed it - i doubt that is the case in your case but maybe theprocess should be changed so they allocate a unique nunber for you to use that say you pay £ 50 and if you don;lt ever complete the car, you can get a refund.

would save this palaver you are having, but then agian, knowing DVLA, maybe not

As said before on this forum, I know of TWO, yes 2 Luegos that have the same, YES SAME, chassis number, they have both been SVA'd, registered with different number plates and on the road. They are both V8's and are both black.

Go figure.

Oh and by the way with the new MOT system it is not unusual to enter a chassis number and then being given a list of vehicles to choose from.

That's a shame, sheffield were spot on with me, even came to me to inspect. Got the paper work back within two days.

Brill service, it's a shame this can't be refelected across the regions.

Notts are absolutely USELESS nowadays. Their new "inspector" is an unbelievable jobsworth.

After I passed my SVA he was at the vosa station doing inspections (as very cleverly they have managed to place their offices where there is not car parking space )

he had been sat in his car drinking tea the whole way though my sva test. He came over to look at my car after the test and i enquired who he was, and he said that he was the insoector, so i asked if he could do it there and then. He came up with all the reasons under the sun why he couldn't do it, so i had to trailer it home, then come back in ten days time,then trailer home again, and all he did, despite his claims of needing to "check all the serial numbers and stuff" was check the vin plate and engine number.

He then said that I couldn't get my reg there and then, despite the fact I saw it written down on the paperwork. I got extremely angry, parked my trailer and tow car in the flowerbeds and across their doorway at the VRO and refused to leave until they agreed to confirm the reg over the phone that afternoon so i could get plates made.

Their ineptitude knows no bounds unfortunately, I think most of our road tax pays paper pushers within DVLA

You probably know this but you can't have the letters 'O' or 'I' in the VIN but have to substitute numbers 0 and 1...

Probably one of their numpties has put it in the system using illegal characters and they now can't find the member of staff with the team braincell to correct it.

I had a really good ride with VOSA and the kit car section of Brum DVLA and then the lot that issue the actual disk ruined it for me so I couldn't take the car to Stoneleigh last year...

Paul - Kinda all gets forgotten once you've screwed the plates on and gone for your first legal blat but I feel your pain buddy!

And you wondered on your first visit, why the sit behind Post office type glass screens, with panic buttons under the counter!

Come to Peterborough - I have the chaps mobile number - he's a top bloke and 100% sensible!

I was there 20 minutes - he inspected the receipts and letter from Ford about the engine, I signed the paperwork, he wrote out the number plate forms - I paid my cash for licence fee - job done!

100% agree about Peterborough.

The inspector is a top bloke and very helpful. He did my inspection, sat me down in the office, went through the paperwork and off I went. He called me the same afternoon with my confirmed registration and I collected the tax disk and papwerwork 5 days later (as I had the inspection 5 days from the end of the month).

Couldn't fault him at all!

They arent all awkard. I can honestly say everyone i dealt with at Gosforth VOSA and Stockton DVLA were absolutely fantastic. DVLA even did a home visit approx 5 weeks before SVA.




Im amazed about the Luego's. Why on earth did the same person stamp the same number on 2 different vehicles????? And why were they allowed to get away with it?
Ref MOT - last test i had done the inspector only had to enter the last few numbers into the computer - maybe this is why they get a list of vehicles to select.

My chassis number has both 0 and O in it. I made it up and it was never queried by SVA bloke or DVLA.

My *ORIGINAL* chasis number as supplied by LUEGO (2 former Luego's for clarity and no detraction from the current owner who is a top bloke) was illegal according to DVLA

It was LUEGOVELOCI + numbers

They made me change it to:

LUEGOVELOC1(one)+numbers

Also I think it was just a spreadsheet that Luego used to allocate the numbers - so might have gotten Pauls confused with anothers? Mistakes do happen...

I think you willfind that you have to use your local DVLA office, you can't go where you chose.
