Ah, but that's from the Luton office. All letters from any department of DVLA should have a post script.

This letter represents the writers personal interpretation of the regulations and regardless of wether right or wrong and in complete disregard of any loss or damage caused will be applied in your case. In the unlikely event of this arbitration being overturned by higher authority you will have absolutely no recourse against the official making this judgement.

I have the very same letter from my first build. But look at the date on the letter posted.
When I wanted to do my own VIN for this car I was told No.
I quoted the letter and was told the rules have changed.

To be honest I think it depend which local office you use and who you see. I used the same office both time but someone new had taken over.

Leaflet INF 26, dated 4/06, which I got in December 2007 from the Maidstone DVLA says -

" There is a legal requirement for all vehicles used on the public highway to carry a Vehicle Identity Number (VIN )
This may be lost when a vehicle is substantially rebuilt, particularly in the case of kit vehicles where the chassis / bodyshell may not have been stamped by the manufacturer. In such circumstances the DVLA local office will allocate a replacement VIN.

The DVLA local office will issue an authorisation letter and registration will not take effect until the Agency receives confirmation that the vehicle has been stamped with the correct identity."

Seems safest to go to DVLA and ask them for a number.

What i thought was a 0 (zero) in my VIN must be an o then, no slash through it and its the last letter before the numbers.

This makes the VIN up from the 1st 7 letters then 10 numbers, this was issued from the VRO and i had wondered about the o and 0 since its at the end of the letters and begining of the numbers.
