I've seen some new VDO speedos at a very good price, however they only read up to 80mph.

Not a problem for me as I'll only be going faster than that on track (Honest Occifer) where the reading on the speedo is the least of your worries.

Does the SVA require the speedo to be able to read the vehicles top speed or just it's top legal speed?

Thats a bloody good question, to which i do not know the answer!

I am pretty sure that it has to read to the maximum the car is capable of.
Will try and find in Black & White unless somebody beets me to it.

Yep

A Speedo must be fitted that is capable of indicating MPH at all speeds up to the maximum design speed.

I remember on "A Car Is Born" the AC Cobra replica with the Chevvy 5.7L V8 had a "Design Speed" of only 110MPH which was used to determine if the tyres were capable of handling this speed. Surely a Cobra with 250+BHP would exceed 110MPH???

I guess Design Speed is fairly arbitrary?

not if the gearing was such that the engine hit the rev limiter / blew up at 110 in top gear.

mind you, for a road car with a big v8 in it that would be stupidness.
