can anyone tell me where to start in the process of applying for SVA?

I've been told I will need a build up inspection for an age related plate, but seeing as though I'd be happy with a Q jobby do I still need it?

Also what and when do I need the dvla ?

It all seems a bit daunting,

Hi Molo!

As you live in Tyne & Wear, you'll probably end up using Sandy Lane Test Centre and Gosforth DVLA.

This is how I did it:

1. Apply for SVA, fill out the forms etc, making up your own VIN number (according to the rules, 17 digits and no i's or o's I think?) send to Swansea.
2. Swansea write back to you, wanting to see proof that you built the car (photos etc) and ask you to fill in an amateur built form. Send that back to them.
3. Sandy Lane ring you and offer you a number of appointment times, usually 2 - 3 weeks away. Book the appointment over the phone with them.
4. Attend SVA! Fail! Probably Important, if you are not going to make it, cancel the appointment! The charge for DNA (did not attend) is pretty steep.
5. Re-test, pass! Probably!
6. Take it home, go visit DVLA Gosforth. Take a seat, wait (usually 2-3 weeks ). Meet with them, explain that you have a kit car and arrange the inspection. They only do home visits on a Monday or something and will try to give you a date 4-6 weeks away! But you can bring it to them to inspect at Gosforth.
7. Trailer the car up to Gosforth for your inspection. They inspect the car, brief look over to make sure the chassis number is there, engine no matches. They take your paperwork, and your cash. You take car home.
8. 3-5 working days later, you get a bit of paper allowing you to get your plates made up.
9. 5-7 days later you get a tax disc and v5 in the post! Time to play.

Doesn't matter about new, age or q the process at Gosforth is the same. The plate you get relates to how inventive your paperwork gets !

Unfortunately due to the way the DVLA is organised, there's no single answer. DVLA Swansea produce "guidelines" for the local offices to interpret. However, they frequently make a pig's ear of it and you then have a situation where the local office says they're waiting for a decision from Swansea and Swansea say they only give guidelines and it's up to the local office to get involved with individual cases....

The DVLA like to get involved early to decide your VIN for you. When you apply for SVA you need to state the VIN. If you make up your own VIN you may run into problems afterwards.
SVA is (hopefully straightforward). What else happens depends on your DVLA office. Some do a build-up inspection before SVA, some do it afterwards, some want a build-up report with photos, some don't.

Only trouble is half the time the local DVLA offices don't know what they want (other than a good kick up the jacksy)...

IE best option is to d/w your local DVLA office and go from there....

The SVA application process has recently changed.

When you send in your application form a letter will be sent back to you requesting

"Please submit photographic evidence of the vehicle in various stages of build and the original receipts for the major parts you purchased to build the vehicle when returning the completed declaration by post to confirm your vehicle class. VOSA are unable to process your application until satisfactory evidence of Amateur Build status (as defined in the Motor Vehicles (Approval) Regulations 2001, has been confirmed."

What this suggests is that the photographic evidence and receipts is not to determine age but to determine that the car was amateur built and not subject to eSVA.

I have just sent mine in so fingers crossed.

OH... and where does the thousands come into it?... I'm only up to about £800, and it doesn't look as bad as it sounds!! although I doubt if i'm going to win any beauty competitions
