Getting a Chassis number.
Mark G - 5/3/08 at 05:55 PM

I've only just started building my Indy a couple of weeks ago, I have the kit from MK and various other parts and want to get it all insured against fire and theft.

I called Footman James and they've given me a good quote but before they'll insure me, they want me to give them a chassis number. I've emailed the DVLA and they have told me to speak to my local office and that the car will have to be inspected and implied in a roadworthy condition.

If its just a chassis at the moment and I can't get it to them how do I get it inspected to get a legal chassis number to insure it with?

See http://www.locostbuilders.co.uk/viewthread.php?tid=83113

You have to make up a number (check online with a VIN checker that it's currently unique). Call the local office and confirm they are happy for you to use it or if they insist on making one up let them (get it in writing).

They you can use it for build insurance/stamp it on the chassis for SVA - where you will also need it.

Once you have the MAC in your grubby hand you tell the DVLA/fill in their forms and they inspect the finished car assign a reg number and give you a form which lets you have the numberplates made. V5c follows.

What happens if someone uses the same VIN as you between your stamping the chassis and their inspection never seems to have been tested but is an obvious weakness in the random number game.

You need build up insurance surely, not F+T as you would apply to a complete vehicle.
You should'nt need a number for that and if they new anything about kit cars they'd should know that you can't have one yet, as mentioned on 5000 other threads

So if I make one up myself, what has to be included in the chassis number.

I used to work at mercedes and there the chassis number included information on
place of manufacture
model designation
engine size and type
body style

What NEEDS to be included for the Indy chassis number?

This is what I questioned when I spoke to them. I've tried searching for the info that I need for the chassis number on here but there are so many threads its difficult to find the right info.

The leeds office won't allow me to use my number even though it is unique, few letter gone back and forth without success, so am thinking of using the services of that guy in the mags to sort it for me, can't be arsed with the hassle of argueing anymore.

Have emailed him a few times without a reply so wondering if he's still doing it. Think I'll try again tonight now I remember.

Regards

Rich

FJ appear to insuring builds on a 'laid up' policy now. I've now got a policy with them but got them to accept an engine number rather than a chassis number.
I've also been in touch with Paul Jepson (SVA paperwork guy). I emailed him and he replied within a day or so and he's still doing it.

Bit of an aside, but there are 33^17 or 65,273,511,648,264,442,971,824,673 possible different 17 digit VINs - the chances of you picking an existing one are somewhat small!

I suggest FJ dont fully understand what you want. You dont have a car yet so chassis number is not applicable.

Ref VIN approval - when i had a recognisable car i fxed DVLA local office with proposed number and they confirmed it was OK. Stockton are however better than most at customer service.
