chassis number stamps
myeates - 11/4/08 at 01:43 PM

hi all just about to stamp my chassis number on and make a separate plate to rivet to bulkhead but what other information needs to go on the second plate or is it just the vin number, do i need to include car type and engine number aswel or is that optional

thanks in advance

Just the VIN; if you want to include anything else it's entirely up to you.

You also need to stamp it "permanently" on the chassis somewhere that MR DVLA can read it. rivited plate no good it has to be on a welded bit of the chassis or on a plate welded to the chassis minimum 5mm high numbers and letters!

great thanks for that knew about the permanent bit but thanks anyway see if i can do them straight

Sorry to hijack the thread but does the chassis need to be stamped for the SVA or just for when DVLA bring their total incompetence to the fore and sort out registration??

I am going to buy a set of the number / letter stamps later as the car will be done within 2 weeks now so what size is best / legible?? Looking at a set of 4mm character ones on ebay at the moment so please dont bid against me - the guy only lives 5 mins away from me so i can collect in person - are these suitable??

linky

Whats your doubt about the 4mm ones???

Any rules on the length of the string of numbers or any ie as it's my first chassis how about vin . 001 ? (not going to do that just wondered)

between 9 and 17 digits i think

yea saw in the total kit car sva roundup on-line that it's at least 8 and the norm for production cars is 17

cheers

Another thread hijack. For a scratch built car, when do you make up the VIN / tell the DVLA? Application for SVA? Application for inspection? I'm almost done with the chassis and would like to weld in the stamped plate before I finish, but obviously don't want to apply for an SVA yet.

btw: my MNR has its VIN stamped on the aluminium scuttle panel which is glued and riveted to the chassis. Not welded at all.
